Arkle Challenge Trophy Steeple Chase – 14:10PM

The Racing Post Arkle Trophy Chase has been the stepping stone race (often to the Queen Mother Chase) for some of the Great two mile chasers in recent years, including the likes of Moscow Flyer and Sprinter Sacre.

In 2017, trainer Nicky Henderson’s brilliant Altior stole the show and is now the favourite to win the Queen Mother Champion Chase at this year’s Cheltenham Festival.

The 2018 Arkle is already shaping up to be a top class race and big National Hunt owner Simon Munir has two very well fancied contenders.

Main Players

Irish champion trainer Willie Mullins is having a bit of an up and down season, with so many of his promising and established stars either not firing on spending time on the sidelines.

Arguably his best horse so far this season has been Footpad, who was a very talented hurdler and finished fourth behind Buveur D’Air  in the Champion Hurdle itself last year, finishing ahead of The New One, Sceau Royal, Yanworth, Wicklow Brave and others.

Footpad isn’t a big chaser, but has developed into an impressive jumper of a fence. He’s won all three chase starts at a variety of tracks in Ireland and it’s clear to all that he very hard to beat in March.

If any others can beat Footpad, North Hill Harvey or Brain Power could prove the biggest threats for the home defence, the last named is due to have a wind operation between now and then.
