What Happened in 2021?

In 2021 Willie Mullins got the Cheltenham Festival off to a flying start with Appreciate It, who won the race by 24 lengths.

The 8/11 favourite ridden by Paul Townend, outclassed his seven rivals with a imperious display in the Festival opener.

Current Favourites

Irish trainer Willie Mullins has won this race five times in the past nine years (seven times in total). In 2022 his pair of runners Sir Gerhard and Kilcruit are dominating the Supreme Novices’ betting market along with Nicky Henderson’s Jonbon.

The chief contenders, according to the latest odds, are:

Jonbon – 7/2 with bet365*

Trainer – Nicky Henderson | Jockey – Aidan Coleman | Age 5

JP McManus purchased this gelding for a pretty penny from the point to point scene and his reputation is beginning to grow. Jonbon won a bumper on his debut at Newbury with very little fuss and has the potential to be the next Nicky Henderson star. Early odds of 33/1 into a top-priced 7/2 fav for the Supreme tells you exactly where ante-post punters are with him.

Kilcruit – 4/1 with bet365*

Trainer – Willie Mullins | Jockey – tbc | Age 6

At this early stage Kilcruit will be going to either the Supreme or, more likely, the Ballymore Novices Hurdle, for which there has been significant ante-post money for him already. Previous Mullins winners of the Ballymore include Faugheen and Yorkhill, but this Supreme avenue is still open and therefore you should bet with caution.

Sir Gerhard – 10/1 with bet365*

Trainer – Willie Mullins | Jockey – tbc | Age 6

After Rachael Blackmore and Willie Mullins scored with Sir Gerhard in last season’s Champion Bumper, Mullins immediately earmarked the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle as the next long term target for the Cheveley Park runner.

Speaking on the 1-2 he achieved in the Bumper, Mullins said: “They are two good horses, and I’m delighted to have them. Looking at it, Kilcruit looks like a Ballymore horse and Sir Gerhard a Supreme type (next season).”
