Bristol City face another test of their Championship play-off credentials at home to Derby County on Friday evening.
The Robins earned a valuable win last time out over Sheffield Wednesday to keep pace with the top six, leaving them one point behind Wrexham in the final play-off spot. However, Gerhard Struber’s men can leapfrog their rivals with a victory over the Rams.
Derby have play-off aspirations of their own, and can also incredibly surge into sixth place from 11th with a victory in Bristol.
John Eustace’s side were denied their third win on the bounce by a late Chris Mepham strike in a 1-1 draw with West Brom last week, and are seemingly rounding into form in the second half of the campaign.
It could be a thrilling match between two play-off contenders, and we’ve found two tips and a bet builder to keep your eye on, using the best odds from football betting sites.
Tip 1: BTTS & Draw
Derby enter the game with momentum on the back of a three-match unbeaten run that could have so easily been three wins in a row if not for a late West Brom equaliser.
Still, Eustace has his side primed for a run at the play-offs in the second half of the campaign and their form on the road could be the foundation. Only Middlesbrough have taken more points on their travels in the Championship, and the 24 points accumulated make up over half of Derby's combined total this season.
The Robins are no mugs at Ashton Gate, winning seven of their 15 matches on home soil. Their recent form suggests there’s little middle ground for Struber’s team: either comprehensive victories, such as those over Portsmouth and Sheffield Wednesday or meek defeats to Preston and Ipswich.
It’s telling that those wins have come against teams struggling near the foot of the table.
That should give Derby all the confidence they need, although it will be far from a straightforward task. The statistic that stands out to me is that both teams have scored in 21 of Derby’s 29 Championship matches, in contrast to 12 of Bristol City’s 29 games.
Given that I think the Rams have enough on the road to nick a goal, but also are vulnerable at the back to concede, I’m taking a score draw with my first football betting tip.
Tip 2: Patrick Agyemang Over 0.5 Shots On Target
Patrick Agyemang has been Derby’s leading man in the final third with eight goals to his name in his debut Championship season.
The Rams shelled out £6m for his signature, and although he hasn’t been prolific, his strikes have been significant in their rise up the Championship table, scoring in two of their last three.
Those goals should have been responsible for six points rather than four, only for the Rams to concede late on against West Brom.
Still, the American is a constant threat in the final third and has registered at least one shot on target in 13 of his last 14 matches.
He only failed to do so against Leeds in the FA Cup, where Agyemang did not start and played only 18 minutes. A price of 8/11 appeals on sports betting sites for Agyemang to find the target at Ashton Gate.
Tip 3: Scott Twine Over 2.5 Shots + Bristol City Under 1.5 Cards + Over 9.5 Corners
I’m going for a relatively safe treble for our bet builder this week at odds of 4/1.
Scott Twine is City’s most creative player and attempted five efforts at goal in their win over Sheffield Wednesday last time out. He’s recorded three or more attempts at goal in nine matches this season and odds of 5/6 are fairly solid if Derby sit in a defensive shell.
City are the most disciplined team in the Championship this term, collecting only 40 cards in their 29 matches without a dismissal. Derby rank on the higher side and may bring out a different side of Struber’s men, but I’m not expecting that to happen on a Friday evening. Odds of 4/6 are available for City to collect one card or a blank slate.
When it comes to corners, both sides are fairly similar over the course of the campaign. Matches involving these sides average roughly 10 per game, with Bristol City right on the mark. It’s good enough for me to take on the 8/11 odds for over 9.5 corners.
