Newcastle vs Sunderland Betting Tips, Premier League Predictions & Bet Builder

Newcastle were left licking their wounds after a midweek thrashing by Barcelona, but there's no better cure for their Champions League woes than a first home win over Sunderland in 16 years.
The Magpies collapsed to a 7-2 loss at the Camp Nou on Wednesday evening as their European adventure came to a shuddering halt and there’s some doubt over whether they’ll be playing on the continent next season.
They start the weekend seven points off fifth place and could find themselves below their north-east rivals if Sunderland can make it eight wins in the last nine league meetings and complete the double.Â
The Black Cats won a scrappy reserve fixture at the Stadium of Light, the highlight of what has been an excellent first season back in the Premier League.
Regis Le Bris will be delighted to have already seen off the threat of relegation, given the current injury crisis engulfing his squad, and betting sites make the Wearsiders around 4/1 to win at St James’ Park after a recent dip in results.Â
The Tyne-Wear derby looks tricky betting heat on paper, but we’ve found three football betting tips for the clash, including a bet builder that pays over 5/1.

Check out our betting tips and best bets for Sunday’s clash at St James’ Park.
Tip 1: Newcastle to win & under 3.5 goals
Unless you are a Wearsider, the clash at the Stadium of Light was a game to forget, particularly for Newcastle’s Nick Woltemade, who put through his own net to secure a 1-0 win for the home side.
The two sides combined to produce an expected goals total of 0.54, the second-lowest total since Opta started tracking those stats in the Premier League.
It’s tough to imagine this game being as dull, but it’s unlikely to be all that high scoring with Sunderland being the division’s third-lowest scoring side and failing to score in 53 per cent of their away matches.
The Black Cats are hampered by a string of injuries, with as many as eight players potentially missing this game, and they make the short trip to Tyneside having won one of the last eight games.
Newcastle’s injury issues have cleared up in the main, although they could be missing both Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali on Sunday.
If anyone is going to grind out a win, it’s more likely to be the Magpies. They’ve only failed to score once at home all season and one goal could be enough to claim the derby spoils.
Tip 2: Dan Burn over 1.5 fouls
The Wear-Tyne derby will have particularly painful memories for Dan Burn, who suffered a broken rib and punctured lung against Sunderland.
It’s likely to be another bruising encounter on Sunday, with Burn matching up against the muscular frame of Sunderland forward Brian Brobbey.
Brobbey is a handful, winning four fouls against Newcastle last December, while he’s been impeded multiple times in five of his last nine starts.
He’s not much of a price on football betting sites to be fouled more than once, but Burn could be the chief culprit, having committed the third most fouls for Newcastle this season.Â
Given his missed a good chunk of the season through injury, Burn can be classed as a serial offender and has conceded multiple fouls in four of his last six starts.
Tip 3: Harvey Barnes to score or assist, Granit Xhaka to win over 1.5 fouls & under 3.5 goals
There are plenty of stats to back up why this game is likely to be low-scoring, mainly based around Sunderland, who have scored the joint-fewest (7) goals across the last eight rounds in the Premier League.
They don’t concede many either and fatigue could be a factor in this game, keeping a lid on the scoring.
Of those likely to net, Anthony Gordon is Newcastle’s top contributor in front of goal this season with a combined 21 goals and assists, but Harvey Barnes is only two behind and is a slightly bigger price on betting apps in the anytime goal or assist market.
He’s registered a goal or assist in five of his last seven starts and has a much better strike rate at home, where he’s scored 11 of his 14 goals.
You need an experienced head in these types of games and Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka may prove vital in relieving some pressure for the visitors via his ability to win freekicks.
Only Trai Hume (31) has been fouled more often for the Black Cats this season than Xhaka (30), who has been fouled at least once in seven of his last nine starts.
