Rangers vs Roma Predictions, Tips & Latest Odds
Kai Watson
Rangers really needed to win against Brann to have any chance of salvaging what has been a disastrous European run so far. In previous years, Thursday nights have been an escape from league failure for Rangers fans but thereโs been no escape this season.
Defeats to Genk and Sturm Graz were fixtures that fans would have looked at in previous years as almost certain wins but neither were to be under Russell Martin. Danny Rohl shouldnโt shoulder the blame for the Brann embarrassment considering heโd be at the club a matter of days but that performance pretty much sealed Rangers fate in the Europa League.
Roma were joint top of Serie A before losing to Milan at the weekend and have started well under Gian Piero Gasperini.
We've picked out three tips plus the top free bets and betting offers ahead of Thursday's game at Ibrox.
Rangers vs Roma Tips
Tip 1: Roma to win & over 2.5 goals
Roma havenโt been free-scoring in Serie A so far this season but Rangers defence is so shaky that this might be the game where they finally score more than two goals. They have scored ten goals in ten Serie A games so far this season but have only conceded five at the other end.
Paulo Dybala looks set to miss out but they still have the likes of Artem Dovbyk, Leon Bailey, Stephan El Shaarawy and Matias Soule to fall back on. With Romaโs sturdy defence and Rangers lack of imagination and creativity going forward I see this being a comfortable win for the Italian side.
Tip 2: Derek Cornelius to be booked
Cornelius has been booked the last three games in a row and has been booked in six of the last ten for club and country. Given he plays on the left side of the defence heโll most likely be tasked with marking/dealing with Soule who will look to drag him inside so he can get on to his left foot.
The Argentineโs balance and agility can cause big problems for the Canadian centre back who is very aggressive and often tries to be forwards to the ball, which leads to a lot of his bookings. I think this one is almost as certain as a Roma victory on Thursday.
Tip 3: Matias Soule to score or assist & Nicolas Raskin to be booked
I reckon with Dybala out, Soule will become the main man for Roma in forward areas and he will be a nightmare for Derek Cornelius to deal with throughout the game. Heโll drift inside and pick up brilliant pockets of space to turn and then drive forward. Heโs a tricky customer and one Rangers will need to keep quiet if they want a positive result.
Raskin was booked against Celtic and is a player that can, on occasion, be wound up very easily. Roma have the likes of Pellegrini and Mancini who love getting under the opposition's skin and winding up opponents, particularly Mancini.
Rangers will need to do a lot of running off the ball and Raskin has been rash at times whilst trying to get the ball back. He wonโt back down or pull out of a challenge and that can be a good asset if your deepest midfielder is well disciplined but that isnโt always the Belgian international's strong suit.
