Alan Kelly's Tips - Thursday, 4 June
We head to the Flat turf meetings at Hamilton Park and Wetherby for Thursday’s horse racing selections.
The ground is currently a mixture of good and good to firm at both venues, although light rain is forecast during the day.
2:51pm Hamilton - Kelpie Grey
Despite having won over both 7f and 1m in the past, I think the Jim Goldie-trained KELPIE GREY will appreciate this drop back to 6f, the same trip as when the grey son of Havana Grey finished a creditable 6th of 25 in the Bronze Cup at Ayr’s Western Meeting last September.
Beaten a little over three lengths in that Class 2 handicap after holding every chance until close home, Paul Mulrennan’s mount will now be running off a mark some 11lb lower. Looking as if he would improve for his first run of the season when sixth in a 7f handicap at Musselburgh in April, the six-year-old was backed into 11/8 favouritism for his most recent start when appearing to be going much the best of the field until failing to find any extra inside the closing stages.
Now dropped to a very attractive mark of 68, there should be no excuses for Kelpie Grey on this occasion with conditions to suit. Kevin Ryan's top weight Belsito won a couple of races over today’s course and distance last September and looks the main danger to the selection along with Kelpie Grey’s stablemate Thunderstorm Katie.
Recommendation: Kelpie Grey - 9/2 with bet365
3:42pm Wetherby - Nanoscience & Seeing Stars
While Ed Bethell’s Catterick maiden winner Borjina may well have been let in lightly off an opening handicap mark of just 72, I think the result of this 14-runner fillies’ handicap may concern the Andrew Balding-trained NANOSCIENCE and SEEING STARS from the William Knight stable. If the prices allow, I will back both horses.
The former, after winning her maiden at Kempton Park on the 1st April, was far from disgraced on her handicap debut when finishing a close third at Newmarket last month. The daughter of Study Of Man is more than capable of winning a race of this nature off a mark of 75.
Runner-up on her first three starts, Seeing Stars was unlucky to come up against a decent horse in Karl Burke’s 95-rated Ellusive Butterfly on the third occasion. After easily winning her maiden at Kempton Park in January, Harry Davies’ mount, following a break of four months, finished a promising third on her handicap debut at Wolverhampton two weeks ago.
Dropped 1lb to a mark of 69, the daughter of Bated Breath looks more than capable of winning a handicap off such a low rating.
Recommendations: Nanoscience - 3/1 with bet365 & Seeing Stars - 9/1 with bet365
3:51pm Hamilton - Eternal Force (Nap)
On his first start for trainer Jim Goldie since leaving the John & Thady Gosden stable in April, the Frankel gelding Altarek looked a real eyecatcher when finishing a close third in a valuable extended 1m 2f contest at York’s Dante meeting.
After missing the break, the mount of 5lb claimer Lauren Young did extremely well to get to within a length of the potential Group class winner Warrant Holder. While Altarek is clearly a useful prospect and is the type to win a decent prize in the months ahead, I’m not convinced that this drop back in trip will suit the bottom weight, who will be racing from 2lb out of the handicap.
Top weight Diego Ventura and David O’Meara’s Theoryofeverything both ran well in finishing just behind the placed horses in York’s Hambleton Handicap last month and are respected, while Karl Burke’s Botanical would have a major chance if able to reproduce his Lincoln run when beaten less than two lengths in fourth place (has disappointed since).
Three places and a length behind Botanical on Town Moor came William Haggas’s strongly fancied ETERNAL FORCE (Nap), who didn’t help his chances by hanging left in the closing stages. Previously successful in races at Redcar, Newbury and Haydock, Tom Marquand’s mount could still turn out to be a Listed of Group 3 performer and is fancied to enhance his Royal Hunt Cup prospects (20/1 with Unibet and Paddy Power) with a victory in this informative Class 2 contest.
Recommendation: Eternal Force (Nap) - 13/8 with bet365
