Alan Kelly's Tips - Wednesday, 12 November
Wednesday’s horse racing action comes from the jumps meetings at Bangor-On-Dee in the North Wales countryside and Ayr on the West coast of Scotland. Soft conditions are expected for both cards.
1:30pm Bangor - Joyeuse (Nap)
This Listed mares’ novices’ chase would not be out of place at a much bigger venue, the field of 6 promising recruits to chasing rated between 130 and 142. Last season’s runaway William Hill Hurdle (Schweppes) winner JOYEUSE (Nap) heading the sextet, on what promises to be an exciting career over fences for the J P McManus-owned daughter of No Risk At All.
While the Seven Barrows stable has had only the two winners from their last 18 runners, most of the horses have been running well (8 finishing in the frame) and while Joyeuse is sure to improve for the run, I expect Nico de Boinville’s mount to be fit enough on her reappearance.
Diva Luna, Queens Gamble and Wyenot are all exciting prospects based on their hurdles form, while the chasing experience of Alan King’s Finest View could prove crucial, especially with the stable going so well. However, I think Joyeuse is one of the most exciting mares to go chasing this season and will be disappointed if the grey mare fails to make a winning debut over the bigger obstacles.
Recommendation: Joyeuse (Nap) - 6/4 with bet365
2:00pm Bangor - Richmond Lake
Alan King’s stable is going well at the moment and his The Doyen Chief ended last season on a high with victories at Kempton and Warwick. The Doyen gelding is unexposed over the bigger obstacles and may still prove competitive off a career-high mark of 137.
Christian Williams’ Deep Cave, a winner over hurdles at Aintree on Grand National Day, is interesting on his first run over fences in this country (won a chase in France two years ago), while Olly Murphy’s Doctor Ken is much better than he showed at Perth on his most recent start back in April.
While the Donald McCain stable has yet to hit top gear this season, I like the chances of his RICHMOND LAKE in this valuable 3m handicap chase. The gelding’s chase mark of 137 is 11lb lower than his hurdles rating of 148, the nine-year-old’s only previous visit to Bangor coming at this meeting four years ago when winning a maiden hurdle by 15 lengths.
Four from 16 over fences, the son of Westerner has been set some stiff tests over the bigger obstacles, including when finishing a cracking fourth in the Grand Sefton at Aintree on his first run of last season. Brian Hughes’ mount has a good record following a break. Now running off his lowest chase mark since winning at Haydock as a novice, Richmond Lake, following a recent wind op, can prove a welcome winner for a stable with an excellent record at the Welsh venue.
Recommendation: Richmond Lake - 6/1 with bet365
2:20pm Ayr - Lundi Noir
Ruth Jefferson’s Captain Butler heads the weights for this Go North Cab On Target Series Qualifier, the lightly-raced contender last seen finishing 5th in a Grade 2 at Kelso back in March when trained by Pauline Robson. An opening handicap mark of 120 looks stiff enough for Jamie Hamilton’s mount.
The Russell/Scudamore-trained mare Fox’s Fancy returns to hurdles after falling on her chasing debut at Hexham last month and is worth watching for any market support. However, I think the Tom Lacey-trained LUNDI NOIR may prove the one they all have to beat on just his third outing over hurdles.
An easy winner on his hurdling debut at Market Rasen back in February, the Doctor Dino gelding reappeared at Chepstow last month, the four-year-old making his handicap debut in a competitive field of 16 racing off today’s mark of 110. Still in with every chance jumping the last, Stan Sheppard’s mount just got run out of it by winner Got A Dream and runner-up Dirty Den on the run to the line.
Since then the winner has followed-up at Warwick, while the second was narrowly beaten in a 17-runner handicap at Exeter’s Haldon Gold Cup meeting on Friday. Lundi Noir is sure to improve for that first outing in 234 days and must have every chance of making the long journey for connections worthwhile.
Recommendation: Lundi Noir- 9/4 with bet365
