Alan Kelly's Tips - Wednesday, 13 May
York’s informative three-day Dante meeting gets underway on Wednesday afternoon with the ground on the Knavesmire expected to ride on the firm side of good, although showers are forecast during the day.
The Tattersalls Musidora Stakes at 4:05pm may shed some light on the current Oaks picture.
2:20pm York - Stressfree (Each-Way)
William Haggas always sends a strong team to York's Dante meeting, the Newmarket trainer responsible for the least exposed of the 11 contenders for this valuable Class 2 mile and a half handicap in the shape of the Lope De Vega colt Klassleader.
Tom Marquand’s mount is closely matched with fellow rival Sing Us A Song, who will improve for his first run of the season when third in last month’s Great Metropolitan at Epsom, while Andrew Balding’s top weight Plage De Havre will be more at home in today’s company than when beating only one horse home in Kempton’s Listed Magnolia Stakes on his reappearance.
Another trainer who likes nothing better than a winner on the Knavesmire is David O’Meara, who runs both STRESSFREE (Each-Way) and Prince Of The Seas, the vote going to the former, a narrow second in this race 12 months ago and last seen at York finishing fourth of 22 in last year’s Sky Bet Ebor behind subsequent Breeders’ Cup winner Ethical Diamond.
Running off the same mark of 101 today, and following a decent first run of the season when second at Ripon last month, Daniel Tudhope’s mount is fancied to make the frame at the very least.
Recommendation: Stressfree (Each-Way) - 13/2 with bet365 (4 places)
3:30pm York - American Affair (Each-Way)
With a field of 22 for a hugely competitive sprint handicap at 2.55pm, I will be watching the race with a view to any significant draw advantage before getting involved in similar contests over the next couple of days. With 13 runners expected to go to post for this Group 2 Minster Stakes, the draw is unlikely to be as important.
Stuart Williams’ Quinault is expected to take the field along from his draw in stall 13, while Mick Appleby’s Betfair Sprint Cup winner Big Mojo is sure to be prominent, although Tom Marquand’s mount faces a tough task under his Group 1 penalty.
Another Group 1 winner is Jim Goldie’s AMERICAN AFFAIR (Each-Way), who has not been seen since taking the King Charles 111 Stakes at last year’s royal meeting. The Washington DC gelding won first time out last season and drawn next door to Quinault, Paul Mulrennan’s mount will get a nice lead before coming with his customary late challenge.
Rated just 73 when making his handicap debut on the Knavesmire three years ago, the six-year-old now runs off a mark some 40lb higher and may well be capable of even more. William Haggas’s Elmonjed has won on his last three visits to York and may prove best of those at a double figure price.
Recommendation: American Affair (Each-Way) - 9/1 with bet365 (4 places)
4:05pm York - Legacy Link (Nap)
Clear favourite for the Betfred Oaks at the beginning of last week, the John & Thady Gosden-trained I’m The One can now be backed at odds of 10/1 after finishing second to Ballydoyle’s new Oaks favourite Amelia Earhart at Chester last Wednesday. It may well be that the Gosden’s have a better chance of landing the fillies’ classic next month with current 12/1 chance (William Hill) LEGACY LINK (Nap), who is fancied to enhance her Epsom claims with a victory in today’s Musidora Stakes.
After winning a minor contest at Haydock on her second start, the daughter of Dubawi looked to be crying out for a longer trip when staying on to finish fourth in Newmarket’s Group 1 Fillies’ Mile on her final outing as a juvenile.
The Juddmonte-owned filly is almost guaranteed to stay the Oaks trip and should have little trouble confirming Newmarket form with Ballydoyle’s Moments Of Joy, while Ed Walker’s Felicitas may have been flattered by her Sandown win of last month with Legacy Link’s odds-on stablemate Sunshine Star running no sort of a race.
Recommendation: Legacy Link (Nap) - 5/4 with William Hill
4:40pm York - The Resdev Scholar (Each-Way)
While it is easy to make a case out for many of the 16 runners in this three-year-old 7f handicap, especially Ollie Sangster’s winning machine Al Najashi, Hasbro Market, Inishbeg and Passing Thought, I expect a big run from the Michael & David Easterby-trained THE RESDEV SCHOLAR (Each-Way), a stable which is always to be respected at this meeting.
The son of Mehmas has won 3 of his 11 starts to date, on ground ranging from good to heavy, and following three solid efforts in defeat this season, connections should have the each-way selection spot-on for today’s race. The excellent Mark Winn takes over from Joanna Mason in the saddle following The Resdev Scholar’s unlucky third at Beverley last week when failing to get a clear run until well inside the final furlong. Beaten just over a length, the 78-rated gelding can go close with a clearer run on this occasion.
Recommendation: The Resdev Scholar (Each-Way) - 16/1 with Paddy Power (5 places)
