4:08pm Newcastle - Farabove The Limit (Nap)

Bruce Banner has won twice previously on the flat and on both occasions, he was ridden by a female jockey (Hollie Doyle and Nicola Currie). Amie Waugh is in the saddle for the first time this afternoon, taking off a valuable 3lbs. A market move would be worth noting.

The mare Jujubella has recent course and distance form of 2-2-1 and is only 3lbs higher than winning by a neck from a 3lbs lower mark at the beginning of the month. She has won from higher marks in the past and is, arguably, in the form of her life.

The vote, however, goes to the three-year-old FARABOVE THE LIMIT, who has improved since being gelded and looked good value for the neck he had in hand of That Darn Cantor over course and distance last month from a 3lbs lower mark. That form has been franked by the success of the runner-up at Kempton on Monday, and the selection is chasing a hat-trick, having previously won at Carlisle on turf over a slightly shorter trip at the end of August.

Paul Mulrennan – who was in the plate here last month - is at Redcar for a full book of rides, so Sam James, who took the ride at Carlisle, takes over.

Recommendation: Farabove The Limit (Nap) - 11/4 with bet365

This is Charlie's Nap of the Day selection - see how it stacks up against Alan Kelly's pick too.

2:02pm Uttoxeter - Back It Up & Post Chaise

There are no prices available at the time of writing for the 3m handicap chase. However, I want to back two - the chase debutant BACK IT UP on good ground, and also POST CHAISE, who will appreciate the forecast rain (5mm) overnight.

It is rare to see a horse balloon every single one of his hurdles, but that was the case with Back It Up at Southwell when fourth over two-and-a-half miles, beaten just over 8l. From a handicapping point of view, one could argue that a mark of 109 is harsh based on his hurdles form – the winner of that hurdle is only rated 110 – but this multiple-winning pointer will surely be a different proposition over fences. But he needs good with a record between the flags on soft ground of 4-PU. He was beaten 48l when fourth.

I think he will win, granted a decent surface, and it is due to be dry when the rain clears early morning.

Post Chaise returned from a 554-day lay-off when beaten forty lengths at Bangor-on-Dee on good ground last month, and he has been given six weeks to get over those exertions. The grey will appreciate every drop of rain and is entitled to come on tons for that Bangor comeback. He is 2lbs lower today and 2lbs lower than his last winning mark.

All seven of the nine-year-old's career wins – six over fences – have come racing right-handed, but he jumped gun barrel straight in north Wales, and I am not concerned about racing anticlockwise.

Fern Hill – who goes on all ground – won the corresponding race last year from a 6lbs lower mark and will have his supporters, but I would be all over Back It Up on good ground but will save on Post Chaise given the possibility that conditions will ease.

Recommendations: Back It Up - 7/2 with bet365 & Post Chaise - 10/1 with Ladbrokes

3:47pm Uttoxeter - Sweeper System

Mister Cessna is another winner on the corresponding card twelve months ago who is back for more, and he can race from a 4lbs lower mark this afternoon, although he did have the four-year-old weight-for-age allowance last year. He must go close given he has a good record fresh and, at the time of writing, the last two runners from the Fergal O'Brien stable have both won.

The mare Rula Bula has won first time out for the last two seasons, and this is the time to catch her on chase debut as her form tends to deteriorate in the second half of the season. That means, of course, that she begins the campaign attractively weighted, and she will take plenty of beating if taking to fences.

I am going to take a chance, however, with SWEEPER SYSTEM, who beat Ice Jet over hurdles at Wetherby back in the spring on good ground when he travelled supremely well. The second is now rated 31lbs higher over timber and 41lbs higher over fences. The six-year-old has the size and scope to make his mark over fences and is likely to be overlooked in the betting, with Mister Cessna and Rula Bula holding more obvious claims.

Recommendation: Sweeper System - 13/2 with bet365
