2:30pm Southwell - Seaview Rock
Olly Murphy's Vocito reverts to chasing on the back of a fluent hurdles win at Uttoxeter. He goes unpenalized for that 18l success and has won over the larger obstacles previously, but he is not one to have too much trust in, and preference is for his former stablemate SEAVIEW ROCK.
The six-year-old was sold out of Olly Murphy's yard on the back of his three-quarter length defeat at the hands of Dunkerque over an additional half mile here last month. He looked all over the winner jumping the last but carried his head high and was run out of it close home.
He makes his debut for Charles & Adam Pogson this afternoon, having cost his new connections £30,000 at Goffs horses-in-training sale eleven days ago. He has only had four career starts, winning over timber on heavy ground at Leicester back in January and finishing third – beaten less than a length – in his sole point to point.
It is possible that his stamina just gave out on the run-in last time, and he remains open to significant improvement. The head carriage is a concern, but the hope is that the market is headed by Vocito, ridden by Sean Bowen, while the race goes to brother James, who rides the top-weight.
Recommendation: Seaview Rock - 3/1 with bet365
5:00pm Southwell - Squeezebox (Nap)
Captain Cool looks well treated, reverting to hurdles having won his last couple over fences, including at Plumpton last week from a 5lbs higher mark. These mini fences should suit, and he looks the one to beat.
He is likely to try and make all, but he might not get his own way up front as SQUEEZEBOX (Nap) has won two of his three starts over timber and impressed when making all at Fakenham when last seen back in October in a first-time tongue-tie.
Brendan Powell was in the saddle last time, but Stan Shepherd – who rode him to make a winning hurdles debut at Market Rasen back in August – returns to the plate. It is possible that he is a bit rusty, having his first start in over seven months, and he has no great record fresh, but the hope is that Tom Lacey has his seven-year-old fit to do himself justice, although the betting is likely to provide valuable clues.
Recommendation: Squeezebox (Nap) - 13/8 with bet365
6:45pm Newcastle - Desert Quest (Each-Way)
DESERT QUEST (Each-Way) returned from a 550-day lay-off back in February and ran his best race since his long absence when fourth at Catterick last time, beaten just over two lengths.
He has dropped to a mark 6lbs lower than when scoring over course and distance – albeit in January 2024 – but looked to be coming to the boil last time. He is an eight-year-old who is, arguably, better on turf, but he handles the surface and ran as if a return to this stiff track would suit last time.
The mare Rubellite is in good form, winning over an additional couple of furlongs at Wolverhampton last time from a 2lbs lower mark when she had Havechoc half a length behind in second. Both are respected, but it is Desert Quest who gets the each-way vote from what looks like an attractive mark.
