Punchestown Tips - Saturday
My three tips below come with odds from betting sites so you can see how the markets are shaping up for both races.
Punchestown 3:45pm Dartmoor Pirate (EW)
Anthony Honeyball sends Dartmoor Pirate across to Ireland with the aim of bringing back a nice prize, and I think he's got a chance of doing so.
Chasing has definitely brought out the best in this horse, and after a fifth placed effort on seasonal debut, he won two races in really night style.
The first of those a decent Lingfield race by nine lengths, before he went to Doncaster and won the Great Yorkshire Chase, one of the biggest handicap chases in the north of England.
Back at Doncaster, he went for the Grimthorpe but unseated rider when beaten. The yard were very disappointed that day, but he was plugging on for third. To me, the disappointment shows just how good they think he is.
Off 131 now, he's 6lb higher than his Great Yorkshire Chase win, and I think there's more room in the mark. At double figures, he's worthy of an each way punt.
- Recommendation: Dartmoor Pirate (EW)
Punchestown 4:55pm - Saratoga (EW)
I think the Fred Winter is one of the most fascinating Cheltenham Festival races, and in recent years, it's been one of the best races to follow afterwards too.
You've got to be close to a graded horse to win it, and after landing it in March, Saratoga is now in a Grade One, where I think he has a chance.
Kept off the track since, he'll be a little fresher than some rivals, which is a positive. His Cheltenham performance was some way ahead of what we'd seen prior to that.
Call it what you like, we're either seeing him improve for experience, or improve for the removal of the handbrake.
Whatever it is, in a juvenile division that might not be as strong as some years, I think he can go well on this step up into top grade company, and is an each way play.
- Recommendation: Saratoga (EW)
Punchestown 5:30pm - Jump Allen (NAP)
Another horse from Cheltenham, Jump Allen went into plenty of notebooks after his run in the Martin Pipe to round off the meeting, and just 2lb higher in the weights here, looks to hold a massive chance.
He was given plenty to do that day, and can be marked up even further because not too many of the runners got into this race, or many that week.
He was hampered when closing up the run in, ran on very well and finished third in the end. There was plenty of horse left that day.
Paul Townend comes in for the ride and that'll be a massive plus. If this horse has a stone in hand, it wouldn't be a big surprise.
Don't forget, he was off almost a year before that Cheltenham run too, so there's every chance he improves fitness wise for it.
- Recommendation: Jump Allen (NAP)
