Supreme Novices' Hurdle Tips
The opening race on the card and we've got tips from three of the Free Bets team below.
They've all put their selections together, and you'll see the latest odds from various betting sites so you can understand the shape of the market.
Paddy Brennan - Old Park Star (NAP)
I think Old Park Star is a NAP, I really do. It's a red Hot Supreme, it really is, it’s as good a Supreme as I've seen for maybe 10 years. There are the likes of El Cairos and Mighty Park in there too but the last horse that won the Supreme on only his second start over hurldes was trained by Nicky Henderson and ridden by Jamie Osborne so that’ll tell you how long ago that was so Mighty Park for me faces an impossible task.
I’ve been all over Old Park Star for the last few months and with his drift to about 3/1 I think he’s serious value and will be very hard to beat. He’s the one for me.
Alan Kelly - Old Park Star
The score stands at 8-5 in favour of Irish trainer Willie Mullins over Seven Barrows handler Nicky Henderson regarding winners of Cheltenham’s Grade 1 opener, the latter’s first success coming way back in 1986 with River Ceiriog. Fast forward the little matter of 40 years and Henderson has an outstanding chance of narrowing the gap to just 2 courtesy of his unbeaten novice OLD PARK STAR.
Following three placed efforts in Bumpers for previous handler Paul Nicholls, the son of Well Chosen has been ultra impressive in winning all three starts over hurdles for Henderson, the most recent when beating a very good novice in the Moore’s Hurricane Pat by a long-looking 18 lengths in Haydock’s Grade 2 Rossington Main two months ago.
Craig Jones - Leader d'Allier (EW)
The Supreme Novices' Hurdle looks far more open than we're used to. I think there will be star quality in here somewhere, but I'm not really able to pin point it yet, and plenty of the main contenders have question marks hanging over them.
Instead, I'll go to one of the outsiders, the Willie Mullins second strong and Leader d'Allier, who according to Ruby Walsh, has taken a nice step forward in recent weeks.
Strong bumper form in France, a good win last time at Punchestown, he's yet to really burst onto the scene, but has fewer questions to answer than some. At 16/1, I think he's a better option as an each way bet, and could really come into it if a few of the more fancied runners make the mistakes they've made before.
