EFL Tips: 55/1 Longshot Acca
Here are Gab's five tips for the weekend along with the best prices and latest odds from our top sports betting sites.
Bristol City vs Coventry - Coventry to win
Coventry completed four consecutive league wins on Saturday, thanks to Jack Rudoni’s injury-time winner, which put Frank Lampard’s side five points clear at the summit, and eight points clear of third, though Ipswich have a game in hand.
It’s another Frank that’s made a big impact at the CBS, though, with Onyeka proving a key influence straight away in midfield, providing the tenacity and athleticism that allows Matt Grimes to do his best work in midfield.
With Ephron Mason-Clark, Jack Rudoni and Haji Wright also showing signs of recapturing top form, the Sky Blues could be hard to stop.
The timing is ominous, then, for Bristol City, who have only won three of their last 10 league games, with Gerhard Struber’s side’s Play-Off bid undermined by chronic inconsistency.
Blackpool vs Wigan - Wigan to win
Wigan look rejuvenated under Gary Caldwell.
The former club captain, who won the FA Cup with the Latics as a player, and the League One title as a manager, cares about the club deeply, whereas his predecessor didn’t seem to be especially popular, so it’s no surprise that Caldwell has had an instant impact.
The early fixtures looked challenging, let the Lancashire outfit have managed 1-0 home wins over Luton and Huddersfield, either side of a 4-2 loss at Stockport, and look much better equipped to secure their League One status.
Neighbours Blackpool also have a squad that should be a cut above their current position of 20th on paper, but they’ve only won one of their last seven, and have thrown in no-shows in that sequence against Stockport and Plymouth Argyle.
Barnsley vs Exeter - Exeter to win
Matt Taylor’s first game in charge of Exeter City in his second stint at the helm comes at Barnsley, as the Grecians seek a crucial three points that would go a long way to securing their League One status.
The Devonians are winless in eight, although six of those were draws, and with a 50+ points bar likely for survival, they have work to do to complete the mission.
Taylor, though, was very successful in his first stint at St James’s Park, winning promotion from League Two in 2021-22 whilst developing lots of talent prospects over a number of years, and is respected for his honesty and integrity.
So, don’t be surprised to see a reaction from City, against a Barnsley side that have won just four of their last 16 league games.
Accrington vs Cambridge - Cambridge to win
Cambridge have been extremely reliable since autumn, losing just one of their last 20 league games – ironically, that came at bottom side Harrogate, but that’s probably more of a reflection of the madness of League Two than Neil Harris’ side.
The U’s don’t concede many goals – they’ve shipped just 27 of them in 34 league games – while going forward, Louis Appere, Sulley Kaikai and Ben Knight have forged an excellent understanding.
So, the visitors have put themselves in a great position to secure automatic promotion, and they’ll be hoping to put some daylight between themselves and the likes of Swindon and Notts County with victory at Accrington Stanley.
The hosts are far outperforming expectations in midtable, but they’ve shown signs that they’ve already peaked, with three successive defeats putting pay to any hopes of an unlikely Play-Off charge for John Doolan’s side.
MK Dons vs Harrogate - MK Dons to win
Harrogate are certainly a different proposition to what they were a month ago, with Simon Weaver’s side going from taking four points from 19 games, to going five games unbeaten.
The fact they’re still bottom of the table after that shows how much the North Yorkshire outfit needed that run to stay alive and kicking, but the Sulphurites could climb out of the bottom two for the first time in several months with an unlikely victory at Stadium:MK.
Hosts MK Dons, though, have a budget to dwarf that of their visitors, and a squad jam-packed with higher level quality, which has shown on the pitch for a 10-match unbeaten run.
A 96th-minute Aaron Collins penalty earned Paul Warne’s side a point at promotion rivals Cambridge last time out, and they’ve been boosted by the return of wing-back Joe Tomlinson from injury.
If the likes of Dan Crowley, Ben Wiles and Rushian Hepburn-Murphy play as they’re capable of, the hosts should get past Harrogate, even if they present stronger opposition now than they used to.
