Alan Kelly's Tips - Tuesday, 5 May
A quiet Tuesday ahead of the opening day of Chester's May meeting tomorrow, the action coming courtesy of the cards at Ayr, Ffos Las, Hereford and Wolverhampton in Britain and Gowran Park in Ireland.
4:00pm Ayr - Donna Nook
Jim Goldie’s Penelope’s Sister has recorded three victories over today’s course and distance, the most recent off a 2lb lower mark last September. Now running off a career-high mark of 68 and with an absence of over 6 months to overcome, Paul Mulrennan’s mount is best watched on her reappearance.
Michael Dod’s Eve’s Boy ran his best race for some time when runner-up at Thirsk last month and has to be respected off a mark only 1lb higher. However, I think the outcome of this Class 5 handicap may concern the two David O’Meara runners, Rajapour and Donna Nook, with slight preference for the latter.
Rajapour seemed to improve for the fitting of cheekpieces for the first time when just failing to catch Michael Dods’ Hale End at Wetherby just over a week ago after finding himself short of room at a crucial stage. A repeal of that effort would put Mark Winn’s mount bang in the mix.
A winner at Dundalk in December 2024 when trained in Ireland by Ger Lyons, DONNA NOOK is on a losing run of 13 since joining O’Meara, the daughter of Bated Breath now running off a career-low mark of 70. Daniel Tudhope’s mount returns to turf following some decent efforts on the all-weather, most recently when third at Southwell last week, the four-year-old only losing out in the closing stages after taking up the running 2 out.
Third on this course over an extra two furlongs back in September off a mark of 83, Donna Nook can finally open her account for the Upper Helmsley trainer at the 14th attempt.
Recommendation: Donna Nook - 4/1 with bet365
5:00pm Ayr - Tupero
Jim Goldie's Aighear proved a model of consistency last season, the eight-year-old mare a winner twice on this course in the autumn, once over today's trip of 1m 7f. The mount of 3lb claimer Amie Waugh usually improves for her first run of the season however, in which case David O’Meara's unexposed TUPERO looks the one to beat.
The four-year-old won on his fourth start for O’Meara when winning a Rider Restricted Race on Newcastle's Tapeta surface in February before staying-on to finish second when switched to turf at Catterick last month.
I don't think Daniel Tudhope’s mount was suited by Southwell’s all-weather surface when fourth there last week and expect the lightly-raced gelding to come out on top in a race which shouldn't take too much winning.
Recommendation: Tupero - 2/1 with bet365
6:38pm Gowran Park - Faiyum (Nap)
Trainer Joseph O’Brien is responsible for three of the nine runners in this extended nine furlong Listed race, best of which is probably the five-year-old Lemsairbat, last seen finishing 5th of 12, beaten just under three lengths, in a Listed race at Longchamp last month.
Abbey Actress won two races for John O’Donoghue in 2024/25, the daughter of Make Believe now with Johnny Murtagh and far from disgraced when second in a mile and a quarter handicap at Leopardstown last month. Rated only 84, Seamie Heffernan’s mount faces a tough task against Ger Lyon’s 110-rated FAIYUM (Nap), but may be the one to follow the selection home.
The Juddmonte-owned Faiyum looked a smart prospect as a three-year-old last year, the Frankel filly victorious on her first two starts in minor contests at Naas and Killarney before going down by just over a length to Jessica Harrington’s subsequent Group 1 winner Barnavara in a Group 3 race at Naas.
Ending 2025 with a seven length victory over today’s course and distance, Gary Carroll’s mount failed to land the odds on her reappearance in the Curragh’s Park Express Stakes last month, but with that run under her belt, Faiyum should have little trouble opening her account for the season before stepping back up into Group company.
Recommendation: Faiyum (Nap) - 8/13 with Ladbrokes
