Latest Profit & Loss Figures
After our good run we were due a bad spell, and that came courtesy of the week ending Sunday 12th July with a loss of -£16.50. Despite winning naps at 4/1 and 9/2 (another two beaten in photos), the losing week was mainly down to some poor picks, with no less than 7 selections finishing last of all.
In a week of sweltering weather, Newmarket's July meeting produced some head-scratching performances, several of which should not be taken at face value.
- P/L for the week ending Sunday, 12th July: -£16.50
- P/L for the year 2026 to date: +£165.84
- P/L for the year 2025: +£22.38
- P/L for the year 2024: +£200.42
- P/L since 1st September 2022: +£666.50
Alan Kelly's Tips - Monday, 13 July
A quiet start to the week with the turf Flat action coming from the meetings at Ayr in Scotland during the afternoon and Windsor in the evening.
3:00pm Ayr - White Ladder (Nap)
It's a case of the usual suspects for this modest Class 6 handicap, with many of the 9 contenders familiar names at the Scottish racecourse, in particular the Jim Goldie trio of Water Of Leith, Thunderstorm Katie and Doon The Glen. Jockey Paul Mulrennan partners Water Of Leith, who may prove best of the Goldie runners, while Taygar from the Michael Dods stable has been in good form this season and should make the frame once again.
Racing off a mark of 66, including a 6lb penalty for his course and distance victory of last week, the highest rated contender is one of the three runners from the classic generation, the John Ryan-trained WHITE LADDER (Nap), previously in the care of Archie Watson as a juvenile.
The grey gelding showed some promise for his previous stable but has improved with each of his three starts for Ryan, most recently when running out a comfortable winner of a 13-runner handicap here 7 days ago with today's rider Sean D Bowen in the saddle. In a race featuring mainly totally exposed horses (this will be the 104th career start for Water Of Leith), White Ladder is the one with the potential to go on to better things.
Recommendation: White Ladder (Nap) - 7/4 with Ladbrokes
7:20pm Windsor - Bintola
Yet another Windsor Sprint Series Qualifier, and a pretty ordinary one at that, with the field of 12 headed by the 79-rated An Outlaw's Grace from the Richard Hannon stable, Sean Leavey's mount a respectable third over tonight's course and distance towards the end of last month.
Under The Twilight and Amazonian Dream can be expected to be there or thereabouts once again, but the two most interesting runners are the lightly-raced pair of BINTOLA from the Harry Charlton stable and Stuart Williams' Media Darling.
The latter, 11th of 13 in a Newmarket Listed race on her final start of last season, failed to beat a single rival on her handicap debut at Doncaster last month. The daughter of Showcasing is clearly better than that, and with jockey Tom Marquand booked to ride, a better performance from the filly can be expected.
However, despite failing to justify favouritism in a Newmarket handicap last month, I think Harry Charlton's Bintola deserves another chance to build on her handicap debut victory over tonight's course and distance back in May. The daughter of Sea The Stars will be having just her 6th career start and fourth on turf. From her draw in stall 5, Lewis Edmunds' mount is fancied to get back to winning ways in a race which is there for the taking.
Recommendation: Bintola - 13/2 with Virgin Bet
Ante-Post: Coral Golden Mile (Goodwood, 31 July) - Tribal Chief (Each-Way)
Having selected the David Menuisier-trained Tribal Chief for Saturday's valuable Coral Challenge at Sandown, the race was pretty much over for Saffie Osborne's mount as the stalls opened, the five-year-old losing in the region of 8 lengths to his rivals in a race where it was almost impossible to win from such a position.
A fast finishing sixth, beaten three lengths, the son of Sioux Nation nevertheless ran a cracking trial for Goodwood's Coral Golden Mile later this month. Currently standing at number 46 for the £175k handicap on the Friday of the five-day festival, and with a maximum field of 20, the five-year-old will need a few to come out in order to make the cut.
Sixth in last year's race off a 2lb lower mark when beaten three lengths after being slowly away once again as a strongly-fancied 11/2 chance, TRIBAL CHIEF (Each-Way) will need to get his act together as the stalls open on the Sussex Downs, but following excellent efforts in both the Lincoln and Victoria Cup this season, the ante-post selection has a big handicap within him at some point.
Recommendation: Tribal Chief (Each-Way) - 16/1 with Betfred & Paddy Power (¼ odds, 1-2-3-4)
