Alan Kelly's Tips - Friday, 5 June
A very busy Friday with six meetings scheduled to take place in Britain and two in Ireland.
The highlight of the non-stop action is the first day of Epsom’s Derby meeting featuring the Betfred Oaks at 4:00pm.
1:30pm Epsom - Shes Got A Brother
The draw is likely to have a say in the outcome of this 3YO “Dash” Handicap run over the fastest 5f in the world. One of the least exposed of the 16 contenders is the Michael & David Easterby-trained SHES GOT A BROTHER, who will be having just her fourth career start.
The daughter of Havana Grey made all of the running to win on her first two starts, both in April on the all-weather at Southwell, before making her handicap debut in a 17-runner contest over the minimum trip at York’s Dante meeting. Holding every chance until inside the closing stages, that was a cracking effort for the fillies’ first attempt on turf off an opening mark of 82.
Drawn in stall 15, I expect jockey Billy Garritty to make a beeline for the rails as the stalls open, especially with the majority of horses berthed around the selection mostly devoid of early pace. I think this has been very much the plan for Shes Got A Brother since that run on the Knavesmire and connections must be delighted with a potentially favourable draw.
Of those horses drawn in single figures, Katie Scott’s Naana’s Shadow, one place ahead of the selection at York, is feared most with champion jockey Oisin Murphy in the saddle for the first time along with Wedonttelllies from the Richard Hughes stable.
Recommendation: Shes Got A Brother - 11/2 with William Hill
2:40pm Epsom - Ice Max
Despite having beaten only 2 of his 32 rivals on his last 4 starts, last year’s winner Persica will be fancied by many to follow-up, the mount of Sean Levey unbeaten on both visits to Epsom, the first coming in the Lester Piggott Handicap at this meeting two years ago.
Strictly speaking, Richard Hannon’s charge should have little trouble confirming his three quarters of a length victory over fellow rival ICE MAX of 12 months ago, the five-year-old now 3lb better off with Karl Burke’s grey. However, Sam James’ mount, following defeats at Chester and Goodwood over longer trips, returns to today’s extended mile, which suits the Dark Angel gelding much better.
Any further easing in the ground at Epsom will suit Ice Max, one of two runners for the stable along with Boiling Point, who may be better over slightly further. Ralph Beckett’s Qirat is unlikely to get his own way up front, as when running out a shock winner of last season’s Sussex Stakes, a bigger danger to Ice Max possibly that of Hugo Palmer’s recent Longchamp winner Seagulls Eleven.
Recommendation: Ice Max - 11/2 with Paddy Power
3:15pm Epsom - Sallaal (Nap)
It seems a bit unfair that Roger Varian’s son of Frankel, SALLAAL (Nap), has been raised 5lb by the handicapper for finishing second over today’s course and distance in the City & Suburban on his reappearance just over five weeks ago.
That length defeat when trying to concede the best part of a stone to Jack Channon’s Rathgar can be marked up significantly however, as jockey Ray Dawson gave his mount plenty to do on his first outing for six months and since being gelded. Sallaal’s only disappointing effort last season came on heavy ground at Leopardstown on his final start and may well turn out to be a Group horse before the end of the season.
Andrew Balding’s Respond landed the odds with an easy success at Chester’s May meeting last time, but a rise of 9lb will make life tougher for Oisin Murphy’s mount. The main danger to Sallaal may come in the shape of Kevin Philippart De Foy’s Tycoon, who caught the eye when keeping on to finish a close third in a Heritage Handicap at Newmarket’s Guineas meeting last time.
Recommendation: Sallaal (Nap) - 7/2 with Coral
4:00pm Epsom - Cameo (Each-Way)
Ballydoyle’s Amelia Earhart heads the betting for this 1m 4f fillies’ classic following her victory in last month’s Cheshire Oaks, with fellow rivals A La Prochaine and Sugar Island back in third and fourth places respectively, the John & Thady Gosden-trained impressive Newbury maiden winner I’m The One splitting the runners.
Just how strong the form of that extended 1m 3f Listed race proves to be, only time will tell, although at odds as short as 2/1, I think Ryan Moore’s mount is worth taking on from a value perspective. John & Thady Gosden’s Musidora winner Legacy Link looks best of the home brigade, while a big run from Joseph O’Brien’s impressive Navan Group 3 winner Thundering On would come as no surprise.
As is so often the case for a stable which will be going for win number 11 in the race, one behind that of early 19th century trainer Robert Robson, the winner often comes from one of Aidan O’Brien’s less fancied contenders. At a best price 9/1 with bet365, the horse that fits the bill on this occasion is Wayne Lordan’s mount CAMEO (Each-Way).
Despite showing some promise as a juvenile, the daughter of Wootton Bassett finished some way down the Ballydoyle pecking order, that was until Cameo stepped-up markedly in trip when contesting last month’s Oaks Trial at Lingfield. After taking the lead 2 out, the filly quickened away from her four rivals, winning by a distance of just short of five lengths.
In a race where stamina is going to prove crucial, the each-way selection is unlikely to fail on that score. Whether she is good enough remains to be seen, but in an open race the Ballydoyle second-string gets the vote in what appears to be an average renewal.
Recommendation: Cameo (Each-Way) - 9/1 with bet365 (3 places)
