Charlie McCann’s Horse Racing Tips For Monday, 1 June - Newbury
Charlie heads to Newbury on Monday for his best bet

It's a busy day of racing action in the UK and Ireland, and Charlie McCann is here with his exclusive free horse racing tips - only at FreeBets.com.
2:50pm Newbury - River King
Classic Encounter did us a favour when scoring at Redcar last week over their straight mile, and his 5lbs penalty is largely negated by Jack Callan's 3lbs claim. George Boughey suggested last week that he has always worked better than his mark and that his family tend to get better with age.
I have followed the horse since trained by Charlie Appleby and always felt he was a miler despite winning over an additional furlong under an inspired William Buick last season. I was not overly impressed with his Redcar win last week, however, despite the fact that he was well on top at the line. He needs fast ground, but this is the first time he will have raced twice within a week, and he is reluctantly overlooked.
My two against the field are The Third Star and RIVER KING, with preference for the latter, who drops back in distance having travelled like a very well handicapped horse when a beaten odds-on favourite on his reappearance. He had won a Windsor Novice over 10f last summer, and he may have just needed the run at Chepstow on good to soft ground, but he travelled like a class act, and he gets the vote for Richard Hannon. Do note regular jockey Sean Levey is at Gowran Park for just one ride – Bunyola Bay – in a valuable sales contest.
The Third Star was well backed at Lingfield – polytrack – over 7f on stable debut for Owen Burrows, and she has been dropped 2lbs for the run. The filly looked a non-stayer on her sole previous start at a mile for her previous yard, but she is bred to get the trip and was doing all her best work at the finish at Lingfield.
Recommendation: River King
4:35pm Newbury - Naval Tribute
The form of NAVAL TRIBUTE'S length-and-a-quarter defeat at the hands of Believitanducan over 2m at Ascot last time was given a boost when the winner did us a favour when following up at Chester on Saturday.
The selection is 1lb higher today and failed to win any of his three Bumpers, but he has been progressing nicely, and his Ascot run was his first at this two-mile trip. Calvert finished half a length behind Naval Tribute last time and is 1lb better off today, but he has only won one of his twenty career starts, and I would be disappointed if he reversed the form.
Cieren Fallon takes over in the plate for James Owen, and the five-year-old has taken well to a visor with form figures of 1-2 since the aid replaced the cheekpieces he wore in two starts in March.
Recommendation: Naval Tribute
5:10pm Newbury - Twisting Physics (Nap)
Jamie Spencer surprisingly took TWISTING PHYSICS (Nap) to the centre of the track at Newmarket last time, but the reality is that the lightly raced five-year-old looked devoid of the necessary pace, dropped back to a mile, and the return to this 10f trip should suit Oliver Cole's gelding. He had finished best of all when fifth in a good race over course and distance on his seasonal debut, when ridden out the back of the field, and his latest effort confirmed that he now wants more of a trip.
The selection holds an entry in the Hunt Cup, but today should confirm whether he is more of a middle-distance sort. He has won two of his six career starts – over seven and eight furlongs – and is not bred to want much
further than a mile, but the evidence of his two starts this term suggests that he is crying out for the trip.
The fly in the ointment could be top-weight Wanderlust – a rare runner at the track for Iain Jardine – who shaped with considerable promise when fourth of nine on his British debut at Chester from a 1lb higher mark.
Formerly trained by Andre Fabre for Godolphin, Wanderlust was beaten just three-quarters of a length by none other than the brilliant Arc winner Daryz on racecourse debut, and that form suggests he is thrown in from a mark of 85. He will be ridden by talented 5lbs claimer Jack Dace.
He cost connections just 44,000gns back in October, but I thought he shaped with considerable promise at Chester when sent off at 50/1. I will be keeping a close eye on market expectations.
Recommendation: Twisting Physics (Nap)
