A huge week with Galway beginning their week-long Festival this evening, while Glorious Goodwood comes on board tomorrow.
3:00pm Southwell - Humphrey
There is a valuable 1m4f Novice at Southwell this afternoon with three previous winners in the field and many top yards represented.
Hello Friend has finished second on both starts to date, beaten three-quarters of a length behind the subsequent winner Counter Intuitive at Thirsk last time, who is now rated eighty-one. A repeat of that run will make her tough to beat.
Kokbastau of Roger Varian has shaped with considerable promise on both starts but has a moderate draw to overcome in stall thirteen of fourteen. Beaten less than 4l in the valuable 1mf Haynes, Hanson, Clark Conditions event at Newbury on his sole juvenile start, Kokbastau again shaped with promise when third at Yarmouth over 10f, doing his best work late on.
He steps up in distance by another couple of furlongs today and is not guaranteed to get the trip on breeding, but he finished well at Yarmouth and is one to keep onside irrespective of today's result.
The vote goes to HUMPHREY, who was made odds on at Sandown on his racecourse debut last month but was beaten a length by the eighty-two-rated Turty Tree. He looked in need of the experience and is closely related to some near top-class middle-distance staying types in Gregory and Lionel.
Drawn in stall two, he gets a narrow vote in a race that looks sure to throw up several winners in the weeks and months to come.
Recommendation: Humphrey - 6/4 with bet365
5:00pm Southwell - Spaceman (Nap)
The hope is that a draw in stall one is not an inconvenience for SPACEMAN (Nap), who steps up to 7f for his handicap debut, having got off the mark at Wolverhampton over the minimum trip last time.
The selection is by the star sprinter Starman but is the first foal of a 7f/1m winner – including on the all-weather – and he was not stopping when finishing in a dead-heat for second behind the 107-rated Sabre Strike at Redcar over 6f on debut on his racecourse debut in November.
The horse he dead-heated with at Redcar – gave Spaceman 7lbs – is rated ninety-one, and I believe the Fahey-trained three-year-old looks fairly treated from an opening mark of seventy-six. Yes, he must prove his stamina, and he is likely to be poorly placed if they migrate to the stands' side in the home straight, but he looks the type who might rock up in a York handicap next month.

6:40pm Galway - Eagle Fang (Each-Way)
The highlight of the opening day of the Galway Festival is the 2m handicap for amateur riders, and I will likely save on Daddy Long Legs if he gets in the race for Willie Mullins, although, at the time of writing, he is first reserve.
I have backed EAGLE FANG (Each-Way), who won a Killarney maiden earlier in the month over 1m6f, but doesn't exactly look thrown in for his handicap debut off a mark of 90.
That said, he finished second in a valuable 3m handicap hurdle off 145 back in the spring, has an excellent draw in stall four – as long as he breaks on terms – and will relish the forecast good to yielding ground that the flat course was described on Sunday morning.
Recommendation: Eagle Fang (Each-Way) - 12/1 with William Hill (5 places)
