2:00pm Carlisle - Epidavros (Each-Way)
A mix of good and good to soft ground at Carlisle, but there is the possibility of heavy – some thundery – showers on raceday.
Sanafi Zabeel is likely to be all the rage in the opening amateur riders' contest, having made all at Hamilton last time from a 4lbs lower mark, where he had the mare EPIDAVROS (Each-Way) over 2l back in fourth, but I hope to see the latter reverse the form on 5lbs better terms.
The five-year-old was returning from a near two-month lay-off at Hamilton and travelled powerfully until fading inside the final furlong. Freddie Robson – is never going to make it as a flat jockey given his weight, but he looked a bit special when riding a winner over jumps at Ayr's Scottish National meeting back in the spring, and he takes over in the saddle for the first time.
The mare has not won for the best part of two years, but she has dropped to a mark 4lbs lower than when last successful and would enjoy any further rain.
Recommendation: Epidavros (Each-Way) - 13/2 with bet365 (3 places)
4:37pm Ffos Las - Winday (Nap)
The filly Saaffya is bred to be smart and makes her belated racecourse debut in the valuable 12f maiden. A market move would be significant, but Emmet Mullins brings WINDAY (Nap) across the Irish Sea, and he gets the vote.
The selection has been juvenile hurdling in France of late but had previously finished third in a Tipperary maiden as a juvenile behind Endorsement – now rated 105 – and Limestone – now rated 102 – beaten less than three lengths.
He was beaten just over 2l in a listed hurdle at Auteuil when last seen in May and will be hopeful that the forecast rain hits the Welsh track before and during racing.
Emmet Mullins has booked Rossa Ryan, and he has a handicap mark of eighty-seven in Ireland, which is 1lb higher than that of the more exposed Blue Hercules.
