Charlie heads to Lingfield on Tuesday for his best bet
It's a busy day of racing action in the UK and Ireland, and Charlie McCann is here with his exclusive free horse racing tips - only at FreeBets.
3:30pm Lingfield - Distant Shore (Nap)
I am slightly surprised to see Roger Varian step three-year-old DISTANT SHORE (Nap) up to 10f for the valuable fillies' handicap (polytrack), although I appreciate she has finished well over a mile in her last two starts over eight furlongs at Sandown and Nottingham.
The filly has been raised 8lbs for finishing second in those runs, which suggests she needs to improve again for the additional quarter of a mile. The classic generation receive 8lbs weight-for-age from their elders, and seven of the ten runner field are three-year-olds.
Robbie Downey takes over in the saddle with Ray Dawson not riding – presumed suspended – until Friday. Downey has been riding out for Varian since returning from a four-year stint in Australia, where he rode more than 170 winners. He has ridden two winners from his last five rides - including one for Varian – in the last fortnight, and this is his only booked ride on the card.
I vowed to back Distant Shore next time and hope connections have got the right trip. Well drawn in stall three, she gets the vote ahead of Spirit Of Athene, who came from last to first to win cosily at Sandown last time. She is 5lbs higher in the weights this afternoon, but was claimer ridden at the Esher track and is, arguably, 10lbs higher in the handicap.
Radiance makes her belated seasonal reappearance for George Boughey but won first time out last term. She is bred to be smart, and this 10f trip looks ideal. Make no mistake this is a cracking and ultra-competitive heat and there will be plenty of winners come out of the race in the weeks to come.
Recommendation: Distant Shore (Nap) - 7/2 with bet365
4:30pm Lingfield - Bone Marra
BONE MARRA has an all-weather record of 1-1-2-1-2 and can improve those impressive statistics in the 7f handicap despite top-weight for Olly Sangster. Indeed, his all-weather profile could be even better given he looked an unlucky loser when second over six furlongs here – his sole previous visit to the track – back in the spring from a 3lbs lower mark.
Stevie Donohoe must have thought he had timed his run to perfection when taking it up inside the final furlong at Wolverhampton last time out, but he was mugged in the shadows of the post. His winning form is on tapeta and not polytrack, but he coped with this surface in April, and he looks sure to run a big race.
Souffler makes a belated seasonal reappearance and has the worst of the draw out on the wing, but he is ridden by a talented claimer, and a market move would be significant.
Recommendation: Bone Marra - 7/4 with bet365
7:15pm Nottingham - Diane Chasseresse
Bradbury will appreciate the return to 10f, having met trouble in running when third at Pontefract over a mile last time. He has been called a few rude names in the past, but he does have more ability than a mark of sixty-five, although he will need luck in running, given that he is invariably slowly away.
I am going to take a chance on the handicap debutante DIANE CHASSERESSE, who is by the sprinter Havana Frey but is a half-sister to the same owner's stayer Alfred Boucher. The filly has raced three times to get her mark over seven furlongs and a mile and steps up in trip to 10f+ this afternoon.
She fell out of the stalls – lost a minimum of five lengths – when making small late gains when finishing in mid-division - beaten just over nine lengths – and it will be fascinating to see what the market makes of her chances.
Midnight Media finished well when second on her first start at 10f when a length second at Chepstow last month from a 1lb lower mark. Tom Marquand takes over in the plate for the first time on the filly, who made her handicap debut over just shy of 12f but had been raced at seven and eight furlongs prior to that Chepstow run, which proved her stamina at the distance. She is considered the chief threat.
