EFL Tips: 30/1 Longshot Acca
Here are Gab's five tips for the weekend along with the best prices and latest odds from our top sports betting sites.
Charlton vs Bristol City - Charlton to win
Although Charlton and Bristol City are only three points away from one another, the psychological framing of this game feels very different.
Hosts Charlton are the wrong side of the 50-point mark, and need one more win to effectively secure survival, under a manager in Nathan Jones who is full of energy, passion, and has created a siege mentality at the Valley – where the Addicks have won eight of their 19 games, and conceded fewer than anyone outside the top six.
Whereas, Bristol City have just sacked head coach Gerhard Struber and, without a Sporting Director in place to replace him, have turned to Roy Hodgson to continue his 50-year managerial career for the last seven games.
Hodgson has already said he won’t extend his stay into next season, that he’s too old, which means that if his impact isn’t instant, the last few games may feel somewhat laborious and inconsequential.
Lincoln vs Wimbledon - Lincoln to win
Lincoln City can secure second-tier football at Sincil Bank for the first time since 1961, which would make it a very Good Friday for the Imps.
The 18-point gap to third with seven games to go makes that outcome a formality, but for the accomplishment to be mathematically rubber-stamped on the day, they need to better Bolton’s result at Plymouth Argyle.
Either way, there should be a party atmosphere among the home fans, which could translate to fun, flair-filled, free-flowing performance from Michael Skubala’s side, who have accrued a whopping 35 points from the 39 that have been available to them since mid-January.
Since a run of 10 points from four games that all but secured their League One status, in their first season up, visitors Wimbledon have taken one point from the subsequent four, shipping nine goals in the process.
Plymouth vs Bolton - Plymouth to win
11 points off second, with only Cardiff within realistic catching distance, Bolton are drinking in last chance saloon as far as automatic promotion is concerned.
Steven Schumacher’s side need maximum points across both games, and to hope Cardiff drop points at Peterborough on Monday, in order for their trip to the Welsh capital the following weekend to mean anything.
With no wins in three for the Trotters, though, including a 1-0 loss at bottom side Port Vale last time out, they don’t have the look of a team ready to strive to make up that gap, as opposed to one meandering into the Play-Offs.
By contrast, hosts Plymouth Argyle are very much the division’s form side, having accrued a whopping 13 points from a possible 15, and have won six of their last eight home games – athletic striker Aribim Pepple looks a real handful right now.
Accrington vs Crewe - Crewe to win
Crewe came from behind to beat Oldham 2-1 on Saturday, courtesy of two terrific strikes from Reece Hutchinson and Matus Holicek; the Railwaymen didn’t control much of the play in the key top seven clash, but they shaded it on chances as their individual class showed.
Lee Bell may need to make certain tweaks in midfield, like giving Max Sanders more support in deeper areas, and they’ll be keen to welcome experienced defender Mickey Demetriou back as soon as possible.
The Cheshire outfit though have players who can create, none more so than Tommi O’Reilly, who has become League Two’s assist king since joining on loan from Aston Villa – laying off 10 goals, through his agile ingenuity.
As such, the visitors should have what it takes to defeat an Accrington Stanley side who, since effectively securing survival with a good run across January and February, have taken a mere two points from their last eight league games – a no-show at Bristol Rovers, with faint Play-Off hopes long gone, suggests motivation is a challenge.
Grimsby vs Harrogate - Grimsby to win
Harrogate had shown signs of life in February, in the form of a five-game unbeaten run, following an excellent performance against Swindon in which they lost 1-0, but since then it’s been four defeats in five for Simon Weaver’s side.
Granted, recent fixtures haven’t been North Yorkshire outfit, who won 3-0 at Tranmere in the only game in that sequence that didn’t come against an automatic promotion candidate, or in-form Play-Off chaser, but the results leave them four points adrift of safety.
Plus, it’s another tough assignment for the Sulphurites at Grimsby, who have accrued a whopping 34 points from the last 42 available to David Artell’s side, after a 5-0 trouncing of strugglers Barrow last time out.
With athletic right-back Harvey Rodgers, cultured midfielder Geza Turi, all-action midfielder Kieran Green, target man Andy Cook, and agile forward Jaze Kabia all in sparkling form, the Mariners aren’t likely to give their beleaguered visitors any leeway.
