Italy vs Northern Ireland Tips
Check out our betting tips and best bets for Thursday's World Cup play-off showdown.
Tip 1: Italy To Win By One Goal
The Azzurri have faced painful defeats in their last two play-off matches to reach the World Cup. In 2022, Italy were stunned by North Macedonia at home courtesy of a Aleksandar Trajkovski strike in stoppage time, while Sweden bested them in 2018 over two legs.
Gennaro Gattuso led his team to six-straight wins in qualifying until they met Norway in their final game, falling to a humiliating 4-1 defeat in Milan and resulting in a play-off showdown with Northern Ireland.
It has all the hallmarks of their match against North Macedonia, an Italy side low on confidence and quality compared to a plucky underdog.
It will be far from straightforward against Michael O’Neill’s team, who have nothing to lose. They were decent in qualifying other than being outclassed by Germany, losing both matches to Die Mannschaft.
Injuries could limit their ability to stun the Azzurri with key defenders Dan Ballard and Conor Bradley both sidelined.
The Azzurri are not going blow anyone away, especially with their recent record, but we’re backing them at odds of 11/4 to edge out the visitors by one goal.
Tip 2: Pio Esposito Over 1.5 Shots On Target
Pio Esposito has been one of the finds of the World Cup qualifying campaign for the Azzurri.
Gattuso threw him into the squad and he has found his feet at international level, bagging three goals in five appearances.
The 20-year-old could fill the void that Italy have been craving, a focal point in the final third that has been sorely missed.
Esposito has not been prolific in Serie A for Inter, but has flourished under Gattuso’s management, scoring the opener in the crushing defeat to Norway that had initially given Italy hope in Milan.
He will be facing a Northern Ireland side without their best defender, Ballard, which may give him the freedom to put the visitors under pressure.
He has managed two or more shots on target in three of his five World Cup matches and after scoring for Inter at the weekend, Esposito is in good form.
Odds of 23/20 are available on football betting sites for him to register two or more shots on target on Thursday.
Tip 3: Northern Ireland Over 3.5 Cards
Northern Ireland were one of the most physical teams during UEFA World Cup qualifying, accruing 20 yellow cards in six matches, only two teams picked up more in the same amount of games.
Notably, 11 of those cautions came against Germany and Slovakia, including eight against Die Mannschaft in their two encounters.
O’Neill’s side will not be afraid to back down in Italy and will bring a physical edge. Betting sites have odds of 27/10 for over 3.5 cards, which is right on the average for their exploits during qualifying.
