7:15pm Newton Abbot - Phantom Gold (Nap)

Chartwell Jock has his first start for Nick Schofield after a poor run at Fontwell last time on his last run for Seamus Mullins. He is very well handicapped on his best form on the flat and finished a close third at Plumpton off tonight's mark on his penultimate start. Schofield is building a reputation for improving horses from other yards, and the booking of Sean Bowen catches the eye.

The vote, however, goes to PHANTOM GOLD (Nap), a lightly raced eight-year-old who won his sole start between the flags and a Bumper here on rules debut for Ben Brookhouse back in July 2023. He was then off the track for over nine hundred days before returning in the spring for Jennie Candlish.

He showed little in three novice hurdles but was a different proposition on handicap debut when second under Ian Power at Southwell over the minimum trip from a 4lbs lower mark. He steps up in trip by half a mile this evening – the distance of his point win – and he is open to further improvement.

The suggestion is that the best horse lost at Southwell – he was given far too much to do by Power – and, whilst a 4lbs rise looks a shade harsh, he can go one better, although this does look a stronger race than the Southwell contest.

Recommendation: Phantom Gold (Nap) - 9/4 with bet365

7:50pm Newton Abbot - Limerick Leader

Nick Schofield may be out of luck in the previous race, but I hope to see his LIMERICK LEADER win the 2m5f handicap chase for the second year running, although the nine-year-old was trained by Alison Thorpe when winning the corresponding race twelve months ago from a 4lbs lower mark.

The selection finished second, beaten a neck, in first-time blinkers when having his first start for Schofield at Southwell earlier in the month over 3m, when he made a significant mistake three out. Regular pilot James Bowen keeps the ride, and the cheekpieces are reapplied this evening.

One note of caution. Schofield has not had a winner in his last twelve runners, and although he has had a couple run well in defeat, it would be fair to say that a couple have disappointed.

Schofield has booked Sean (Bowen) for Chartwell Jock, the champion jockey is aboard the chief threat to his Limerick Leader in the mare Walkin Out, who makes her debut for David Pipe. A prolific winner between the flags – won thirteen of her twenty point-to-points – she also won a Maiden Hunter Chase at Cartmel three years ago.

She finished second in her latest Hunter Chase at Warwick – looked outstayed over three miles – but the handicapper has relented and dropped her rating 6lbs. The drop back in distance to 2m5f is considered a positive – the same trip as when successful at Cartmel – and she looks the one to beat, but preference is for Limerick Leader.

Recommendation: Limerick Leader - 2/1 with bet365

8:35pm Newbury - Redbud Sixteen

I couldn't see Optician getting beaten at Doncaster last Sunday over 12f, and he got the job done well in the end, but Tiger travelled every bit as well under Harry Vigors before going down by half a length.

At the time of writing, Jack Dace is booked to ride the Ian Williams-trained French-bred, but Dace was taken to hospital after his mount slipped and was fatally injured at Brighton on Sunday. He was reported to be conscious and undergoing tests, and let's hope he is back in the plate sooner rather than later. One would imagine he will be replaced in the saddle for tonight's race.

Tiger has yet to win in eight starts on turf, and Williams will be looking for a suitable replacement in this apprentice contest with Vigors booked for the recent Salisbury winner REDBUD SIXTEEN, who carries a 5lbs penalty for that success, although Vigors' 3lbs claim largely negates the penalty.

Williams has used apprentices Ryan Kavanagh and Vigors in the last fortnight, but the former does not have a ride at present on Tuesday or Wednesday. If he is not suspended for this evening, then I would suggest he might get the nod.

I was impressed with how Tiger travelled at Doncaster, and this slight drop back down in distance is considered a plus, but the filly Redbud Sixteen made all to win by 6l over 10f at Salisbury and, after just five career starts, is open to significant improvement with this evening's additional furlong considered a plus on her breeding.

One would imagine Vigors – or his agent - had the choice between Redbud Sixteen and Tiger, and I agree, although I will back both if prices allow, and I am satisfied with the replacement for Jack Dace.

Recommendation: Redbud Sixteen - 15/8 with bet365
