Mumbai Indians v Royal Challengers Bengaluru Preview & Tips

  • Tata Indian Premier League 17
  • Thursday April 11, 2024, 3pm UK
  • Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai

The Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore are two of the most recognisable names in the Indian Premier League. So too are their respective openers, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

Unfortunately, both are languishing towards the foot of the current table, winning just one game apiece so far. Mumbai have played four and Bangalore five.

With 14 group games to be played, there’s still time to catch up in the race for the top four. But one thing is for sure, neither can afford many more slip ups. They need to get on a roll soon.

I expected both teams to be better than their positions suggest, particularly Bangalore. I thought they would be a dark horse for the title - their first in the competition’s history.

This one really could go either way, but before sitting down to write this preview my thought was, ‘I can see RCB winning this one’.

Honestly, with them having lost their last three games, would I have taken them to win at odds on? No. But I think the 27/20 on offer with BetMGM represents good value against a Mumbai team who are struggling just as much.

Bangalore lost their last match off the last ball to Rajasthan Royals, and there’s no shame in that given the latter are flying high at the top of the table.

Runs should continue to flow at Wankhede

There are a few reasons why I think this will be such a watchable game. One is because of how important a result is to both teams, another is because of the star names on show and the third is because I expect it to be a high-scoring clash.

I previewed Mumbai’s win over Delhi on Sunday when both teams posted over 200.

There was a low-scoring clash at the Wankhede a week or so ago against Rajasthan, but that seems to be an anomaly given recent history. When you look down IPL matches there from the start of last season, there are 200 totals aplenty.

Both teams to score 180 plus at 13/10 with betfair certainly has appeal. Both sides did that in their most recent matches - Mumbai with 234-5 in beating Delhi and Bangalore with 183-3 in losing to Rajasthan.

The same firm’s 11/5 on RCB to win and both teams to score 170 plus totals is another bet which has caught my eye.

I do have a final runs punt for you with betfair, but I’ll come back to that later.

Betway have an RCB win and over 0.5 run outs in the match available at 12/5.

In any short form match, the chances of at least one run out has to be good given the fast-paced nature of things and the mad scramble for runs at the end of each innings. I would be taking that.

Batting talent on show ensure this will be the hottest ticket in town

Du Plessis, Kohli, Maxwell, Sharma, Yadav, the list goes on. This could be a tough night for the bowlers.

bet365 are offering a boost 13/4 on a bet builder which requires Bangalore pair Kohli and Maxwell to hit one six apiece and Mumbai’s Suryakumar Yadav to do the same.

These three have the ability to take any attack in world cricket apart.

At the time of writing, there have been two centuries so far in the ongoing IPL - both in the same game. Kohli scored one against Rajasthan at the weekend before Jos Buttler matched him to pinch a win for the men in pink.

Vbet are offering 5/1 on a century to be scored in this fixture. That’s definitely worth considering, as is betfair’s same price - 5/1 on both teams to post totals of 200 or more.

One batter who I haven’t mentioned is Mumbai’s Tilak Varma, a 21-year-old Mumbai star who averages close to 40 in T20 cricket across a 74-game career.

He is available at a juicy 11/2 with Paddy Power to be Mumbai’s top batter in the match. I’d be taking a low stakes approach with this.

Yes, there are so many team-mates who could usurp him, but he’s in good form with scores of 25, 64, 32 and 6 in four matches batting at four or five in the order. He top-scored with that 64. He’s definitely worth thinking about.
