Mares’ Chase Tips

The Mares’ Chase has been placed on the Festival’s final day and will need a few years to find its feet, as the race needs time to encourage mares to stay in training.

It’s a race that has been dominated by Ireland so far, though, with Irish-trained horses winning all three runnings of the Mares’ Chase to date.

Charlie McCann takes a closer look at the race and has a 10/1 selection to take on the short-priced favourite.

Charlie McCann - Brides Hill (Each-Way)

I think Dinoblue is too short at 11/10 given she is unproven at the trip and carries a 5lbs penalty. The grey ran a cracker behind El Fabiolo last time, but I expect her to drift on the day.

Allegorie De Vassy carries a 3lbs penalty but was back to her best when scoring at Naas last time. Like stablemate Gaelic Warrior, has shown a preference to race right-handed prior to her last start when she jumped well, although she will always favour going right-handed.

The two Gavin Cromwell mares, Limerick Lace and BRIDES HILL, go unpenalised, and preference is for the latter, who sluiced home at Huntingdon last time in the manner of a progressive mare. Her stablemate Limerick Lace did beat La Renommee by 10L at Doncaster while the selection only had 6L to spare over the same rival last time.

That said, Brides Hill is improving rapidly over fences, and she gets the each-way vote at 10/1 with William Hill.

Mares’ Chase Betting Odds

Irish-trained horses dominate the top of the betting market with the Willie Mullins-trained Dinoblue a strong favourite after an excellent season.

She finished second in last year’s Grand Annual as was last seen when chasing home El Fabiolo in the Grade 1 Dublin Chase - back against her own sex here, she’s likely to take all the beating.

What Happened Last Year?

Impervious made it four wins in a row over fences when landing the 2023 Mares’ Chase in the silks of legendary owner JP McManus.

Ridden by Colm Murphy, Impervious edged out Allegorie De Vassy in a thrilling finish up the Cheltenham hill.
