Boxing Betting Tips
Here are this week's boxing tips from our resident boxing expert, Lewis Watson.
Saul โCaneloโ Alvarez v Terence Crawford Tips
Itโs fight week in Las Vegas, Nevada, and the excitement is building for one of the most anticipated contests of the year: Saul โCaneloโ Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford for all of the marbles at super middleweight.
Youโd be forgiven for not foreseeing this bout materialise this time last year. All signs were pointing towards David Benavidez as Caneloโs next opponent, until Turki Alalshikh opened up his now infamous, and limitless, chequebook.
Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) hasnโt officially weighed over 154 pounds for a professional contest throughout his 17 years and 41 fights in the paid ranks, but is leaping up to Caneloโs (63-2-2, 39 KOs) natural home of 168 pounds with plans to grab another slice of history.
A win for Crawford would see โBudโ become the first undisputed champion in three different weight classes, cementing his spot firmly in boxingโs history books.
But, Canelo is unbeaten as a super middleweight. And with 19 previous bouts in front of a Mexican-heavy Las Vegas crowd, heโll believe he holds a majority of the cards inside the Allegiant Stadium.
Letโs take a look at the best tips for Saturdayโs fight:
Terence Crawford to beat Canelo Alvarez
Crawfordโs ability to adjust to his opponents in fights has enabled him to have success in a multitude of weight classes against a number of different styles.
โBudโsโ switch-hitting can bamboozle the best of opponents, and his natural talent and technique could come close to anything Canelo has seen before.
Lateral movement, flurries of punches and springing in and out of the pocket against the aggressive Canelo will be pivotal to Crawfordโs success in this contest, and he has shown this ability time and time again en route to this toughest assignment of his career.
If he is able to read the rhythm of Canelo, attacks to the body โ something that a majority of fighters, barring Gennady Golovkin, have neglected against the Mexican โ could pay big dividends down the stretch.
Dmitry Bivol set the template on how to beat Canelo with front-footed aggression, but Crawford will have to do that without natural size on his side.
Crawford is a special fighter and doesnโt yet know how to lose.
Canelo Alvarez - Most punches thrown
Donโt be lured into a false sense of security by re-watching Caneloโs last fight with William Scull.
Canelo was abject that evening in Riyadh, but usually the Mexican sets an aggressive pace with flurries of attacks, marching forward with his trademark high guard.
Whether he lands the most punches is a different argument completely, but if the Mexican gets off to a slow start then expect him to start throwing more and more as the fight goes on.
Terence Crawford to be knocked down & win
Canelo may not have that one-punch knockout in his locker anymore, but he always hits hard and, importantly, he does with accuracy.
His left hook is the money shot that writes headlines, but his overhand right is just as dangerous, and with a couple of weight classes extra venom behind these attacks, Caneloโs power may make bigger dents in Crawford than they have in previous opponents that have taken the Mexican the distance.
Canelo is extremely economical in his attacks and is a master at setting traps and striking with counters โ any Crawford complacency will be punished by an on-song Canelo. Despite not registering a stoppage in his last six wins, Canelo has dropped and hurt four of his opponents.
Lewis Crocker v Paddy Donovan Tips
Six months on from their controversial first bout, Lewis Crocker and Paddy Donovan meet again this weekend, but with some added spice on the line.
The IBF welterweight will now be the prize for these 147-pound rivals, and Windsor Park in Belfast will host a historic night between these pair of Irish fighters.
Back in March, Paddy Donovan was disqualified for repeated fouls in a fight that he was dominating.
Crocker was given the victory, but a hollow one at best.
There was no obligation for these two to run it back, but the nature of the first meeting left too many questions unanswered, and now, on a grander stage, Crocker and Donovan will receive way more attention and eyeballs than they did inside the SSE Arena six months ago.
After sharing eight rounds, both men will be confident in making the necessary adjustments to get over the line on Saturday, but who will leave Belfast as the new world champion at welterweight?
Paddy Donovan to beat Lewis Crocker by Decision/Technical Decision
It may have been a surprise to many, but Paddy Donovan dominated Lewis Crocker in their first meeting, bamboozling the Belfast fighter with his slick style and ability to fight in and out of range.
Of course, all of that good work was undone by fouls โ most notably by head clashes and hitting Crocker after the bell โ but his team will be confident that the blueprint has already been written to beat Crocker.
Crocker is a game, tough fighter, but probably lacks that technical schooling to be able to keep up with Donovan over 12 championship rounds.
Donovan will have been seething over the last six months, and his determination to right the wrongs of Marchโs bout canโt be underestimated.
Lewis Crocker vs Paddy Donovan - Over 9.5 Rounds
Crocker was hurt badly by Donovan in their opening bout, suffering nasty cuts to both eyes and getting floored โ illegally โ in the eighth round.
He may not have the tools to get a win over Donovan when the chips are down, but heโll surely change his gameplan this time around now that he has had a taste of what the southpaw has to offer.
If Crocker can box more off the back foot and use his long, stiff jab, then he could enter the championship rounds still with a puncherโs chance of getting the upset.
Donovan will still feel the scars of March and wonโt be as gung-ho in his attacks as he was previously, maybe providing a more tactical battle this time around.
