Boxing Betting Tips
Here are this week's tips from our resident boxing expert, Lewis Watson.
Galal Yafai vs Francisco Rodriguez
Big time boxing heads back to Birmingham this weekend, with Galal the latest of the Yafai brothers to move closer towards a world title.
The 32-year-old southpaw is 9-0 since turning over into the pros, running unbeaten towards a flyweight world title opportunity after bagging a gold medal at the 2021 Olympic Games.
A sixth-round TKO win over domestic rival Sunny Edwards last November springboarded him into this position on DAZNโs Saturday night bill, now defending his interim WBC title at 112 pounds against the experienced and well-travelled Francisco Rodriguez.
A meeting down the line with the flyweight king Kenshiro Teraji is the prize on offer if Yafai can get past Rodriguez this weekend.
Letโs take a look at the best tips from Birmingham this Saturday night.
Galal Yafai to beat Francisco Rodriguez by Decision/Technical Decision
Galal Yafai is gaining a reputation as being a heavy-handed 112-pounder.
The technically gifted southpaw has stopped seven of his nine opponents in the pro game, and will be licking his lips at the prospect of mixing it with a fighter who has six losses on his record.
But Rodriguez has mixed it with some of the very best around the lower weight classes.
Losses to the likes of Junto Nakatani, Kazuto Ioka, Donnie Nietes, and Roman Gonzalez have made him a familiar opponent at flyweight and super-flyweight, and fighting in countries including Mexico, Guatemala, Philippines, Japan and the USA means he wonโt be fearful of a trip to Englandโs midlands.
Yafai has claimed he loves fighting against the all-action Mexican style, and there is no reason not to believe him. Rodriguez has fought every style that there is in the sport and will durable until the final bell, despite Yafai sweeping the scorecards.
Conah Walker v Liam Taylor
Itโs hard not to envisage fireworks in this one.
The British welterweight title is up for grabs here as Conah Walker attempts to defend the strap he won in dramatic fashion against Harry Scarff in January, building on a highlight reel onslaught against the former champion in the 11th round โ prior to that, Walker had lost every round.
Liam Taylor can bang. Heโs recorded stoppages in half of his 28 wins as a pro, and at 34 years of age is looking for another tilt on the domestic scene at 147.
A head clash with Chris Jenkins in 2019 cut short Taylorโs last chance to bag a British title, so expect the Lancashire fighter to arrive in Birmingham with a point to prove.
Taylor has only lost to Tyrone Nurse and David Avanesyan โ two very good operators in their prime โ so Walker will have to be at his best to defend his Lonsdale strap on Saturday.
But arriving as a champion and that confidence banked from Januaryโs win should get Walker that edge to see him over the line.
