EFL Tips: 10/1 Longshot Acca
Here are Gab's five tips for the weekend, featuring the best prices and latest odds from our top-rated betting sites.
Ipswich vs QPR - Ipswich to win
Ipswich’s away draws at West Brom and Southampton in the last week mean that Kieran McKenna’s side aren’t promoted yet, but they can finish the job with a home victory over QPR.
If the Tractor Boys draw, then it goes to the action elsewhere, and putting aside the unlikelihood of Middlesbrough hitting six past Wrexham, they’d need Millwall to fail to beat relegated Oxford at home, and if they lose, they then need both of their immediate rivals to fail to win.
The simplest way for Town to complete the job on the day, though, is for them to take business into their own hands, but the Suffolk outfit aren’t exactly in flying form with one win in five.
Since winning the East Anglian Derby in April, they’ve missed opportunities to wrap things up, but have been helped by other teams dropping points, and Southampton’s FA Cup run that may have just taken it out of them at a crucial stage.
So, with a strong defensive pairing of Dara O’Shea and Cedric Kipre, an impressive midfield combination of Azor Matusiwa and either Jack Taylor or Dan Neil, and a plethora of depth in attacking areas, Ipswich should do what’s required.
They welcome a midtable QPR side that have made positive strides this season, but have lost their last three.
Derby vs Sheffield United - Derby to win
The bad news for Derby County, as they go into the final day with a realistic chance of reaching the Play-Offs, is that they rely on other results going their way.
If Wrexham or Hull are victorious, John Eustace’s side can’t attain a top-six finish, irrespective of their result this Saturday.
The good news, though, is that they have the most favourable fixture of the three.
Wrexham welcome Middlesbrough to Stok Cae Ras, with their visitors still in with an outside shout of automatic promotion, while Hull host a Norwich side that just missed out, but have been one of the best teams in the league since Phillippe Clement took charge.
Derby, on the other hand, host Sheffield United, who have long since seen their own Play-Off hopes fizzle out by finishing the season with five defeats in nine, including back-to-back home losses to Blackburn and Preston North End.
Derby may be without star forward Patrick Agyemang, but carry a multitude of threats in attacking areas, and are hoping to welcome on-loan Liverpool prodigy Bobby Clark back into the XI.
Stevenage vs Wigan - Stevenage to win
Stevenage’s 1-1 draw at Doncaster last weekend means only a win will guarantee Alex Revell’s side a place in the Play-Offs, and a Semi-Final date with Bolton, Bradford or Stockport.
Should the Boro draw, they then need Luton and Plymouth Argyle to fail to win against Bolton and Northampton respectively – and given that the latter have just lost 10 in a row, that’s not an outcome they can count on.
A defeat, on the other hand, and they’d need Luton to lose in Lancashire, due to their superior goal difference, as well as that unlikely Argyle slip-up at Sixfields.
The Hertfordshire outfit do go into the final day in decent form, though, with that 5-1 no-show at Bolton being their only defeat in eight, with Revell’s side priding themselves on sturdy defensive foundations led by Charlie Goode.
Leyton Orient vs Burton - Leyton Orient to win
Burton’s five-match unbeaten run, culminating in a 1-1 draw with relegation rivals Exeter last weekend, means Gary Bowyer’s side are safe for another season.
Leyton Orient, however, aren’t off the hook just yet after a seven-match winless run at the worst possible time, with Richie Wellens’s side yielding just three points in that sequence.
As such, the O’s have to beat Burton to guarantee their place in League One again next season. Whereas, if they fail to win, they have to hope Exeter do likewise against Bradford, and Wellens will be determined to ensure his side look after their own fate.
The East Londoners have a deadly goalscorer in Dom Ballard, though and, crucially, they have star forward Aaron Connolly back at the business end.
So, Orient are rightly favourites, as they look to follow Burton’s example, and retain their divisional status.
Crewe vs Cambridge - Cambridge to win
Cambridge’s 3-0 victory over Barrow in their last home game of the league campaign, means they go into the final day in the box seat in the race for the third automatic promotion spot, behind MK Dons and Bromley.
The task is simple: match or better the respective results of Salford, at Crawley, and Notts County, at home to Bristol Rovers, and the U’s will be back in League One at the first attempt.
Neil Harris has assembled a team of fit, reliable professionals at the Abbey, with a star individual in Ben Knight who can bring that sprinkling of genius.
That consistency in doing the simple things well every time has translated into comprehensive performances, and a season of no major drops in form, which is why Cambridge have only lost eight matches all year.
They’ve dropped unnecessary late points in recent weeks, though, which means they aren’t quite joining Bromley and MK Dons on the champagne just yet.
They’re hoping to crack it open at Crewe, though, with the hosts, having missed out on the top seven, going into the final day off the back of three straight league defeats.
