EFL Tips: 18/1 Longshot Acca
Here are Gab's five tips for the weekend, featuring the best prices and latest odds from our top-rated betting sites.
Wrexham vs Stoke - Wrexham to win
Wrexham’s 2-0 loss at Birmingham on Sunday means Phil Parkinson’s side are four points off the Play-Offs with four games to play, despite rivals Hull having lost the day before.
As such, the Red Dragons probably need maximum points from this week – Saturday’s hosting of Stoke and Tuesday’s trip to Oxford – and Hull to drop points against Birmingham and/or Leicester, in order to go into the penultimate weekend’s trip to Coventry with a chance.
The good news is that they welcome a Stoke City side that, since an excellent first three months of the season, have lost 16 of their last 28 league games.
Mark Robins’ side have been producing what looked like some jaded, end-of-seasonish performances for a couple of months now, so this is one of the most favourable fixtures the hosts could ask for.
Leyton Orient vs Rotherham - Leyton Orient to win
A five-match winless run means Leyton Orient still have work to do to secure their League One status, and ensure the R word is ‘rebuild’ rather than ‘relegation’ – after the O’s lost six key players from last season’s Play-Off Finalists.
It’s been a challenging campaign for the East Londoners, who have been plagued by unavailability to key men, especially across their spine, but they’ve relied on a fabulous goalscorer in Dom Ballard, who tops the charts with 22.
The O’s should have enough to see off a Rotherham side who’s relegation was mathematically confirmed in midweek, after a 3-0 loss at Wigan.
Millers boss Lee Clark revealed, post-match, that there are ‘lots of negatives’ at the South Yorkshire club from a cultural perspective, and that one player had called in sick one morning, then ended up training.
Reading vs Cardiff - Cardiff to win
Cardiff City can mathematically rubber-stamp promotion back to the Championship, at the first time of asking, at the Majeski Stadium on Saturday, should one of the following two events occur.
The Bluebirds can finish the job by winning in Berkshire, if Stockport fail to win at Exeter, or if they avoid defeat, and Stockport lose and Bradford fail to win their lunchtime kick-off at Barnsley.
Brian Barry-Murphy has done a phenomenal job with the Welsh outfit, channelling some excellent developmental qualities and stylistic principles in order to inspire City to top-2 success.
Conversely, Reading boss Leam Richardson has faced criticism from some quarters over style of late, despite a competitive record on paper with the Play-Off outsiders.
Gillingham vs Grimsby - Grimsby to win
Gillingham are as favourable opponents as you’ll get in League Two.
The Gills banked too many points in the first two months of the season to be fighting for their lives at this stage but, since late September, they’ve only won six games – only bottom side Harrogate have won fewer – all of them coming against bottom half opposition.
As such, visitors Grimsby are rightly firm favourites for their trip to Priestfield, as David Artell’s side look to bounce back from a 2-1 loss at Play-Off rivals Chesterfield in Tuesday’s crucial six-pointer.
The Mariners have won four of their last six league games, and have some excellent players in Harvey Rodgers and Cameron McJannet in defence, Geza Turi and Kieran Green in midfield, and Andy Cook and Jaze Kabia in attack.
Crewe vs MK Dons - MK Dons to win
Mathematically speaking, MK Dons need a maximum of seven points from their remaining three league games to secure promotion to League One.
Realistically speaking, it’s more like six, because their goal difference is +14 on 4th-placed Notts County, and even if they win their final three, they’re not going to make up that goal difference on one MK defeat.
So, even with last week’s 2-1 victory over Bromley being just a first success in five, Paul Warne’s men are very much in the driving seat, and it looks as though the quality in their £7M+ budget has shone through.
Crewe are hoping to join the Buckinghamshire outfit in the third-tier next season, but making the Play-Offs looks a stretch for Lee Bell’s side.
With a six-point deficit, they need to win all three of their remaining games, and hope for something approaching capitulation from Swindon, Salford or Chesterfield – even then, they’re behind Barnet and Grimsby in the queue.
