Cheltenham Gold Cup Day Bets and Tips

The Blue Riband race of the National Hunt season is the Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup, which will take place this year on Friday 16th of March, 2018.

Cheltenham Gold Cup Day – Friday 16th March 2018

Worth a cool £575,000 in Win and Place prize-money, it is the most valuable steeplechase bar the Grand National.

But Cheltenham Gold Cup Day 2018 is less about the money and more about legacy, about cementing your name on that Roll of Honour, including all the famous names through the years; from Best Mate to Desert Orchid, Denman to Kauto Star.

This year, shortly after 3.30pm, another name will be added and trainer Nicky Henderson will be hoping it’s his recent King George winner Might Bite, who heads the Cheltenham Gold Cup betting for the big one.

Gold Cup Runners & Riders 2018

Jockey Nico De Boinville has steadily proved himself to be a man for the big occasion and the big races, and he usually rides the biggest and most talented horses hailing from the Nicky Henderson stable.

His jockeyship aboard the great Sprinter Sacre has led to further big race success  aboard the imposing dark gelding Might Bite, this year’s 7/2 favourite for the Cheltenham Gold Cup betting on the back of his King George win.

Might Bite looks every inch the superstar and could come alive in the Spring.

2017 Gold Cup winner Sizing John is the main danger at Cheltenham Gold Cup 2018 odds of 7/1. He will be ridden by Robbie Power for top Irish trainer, Jessica Harrington.

Look out for emerging names such as Our Duke and Doney Island, while whichever horse Ruby Walsh chooses to ride on the day will also be attracting plenty of support in the Cheltenham Gold Cup betting 2018.

Gold Cup Betting Tips

Looking at the Cheltenham Gold Cup Betting 2018 the clear threat to all is MIGHT BITE at a top price of 4/1. He comes here on the back of a gutsy King George win, he is even better around Cheltenham and the rest may not be able to cope with his jumping and cruising speed.

Further down the Cheltenham Gold Cup 2018 odds lists at big prices, Double Shuffle could offer some betting value at 40/1 after a career best win at Kempton. While Killultagh Vic would be an interesting bet at Cheltenham Gold Cup odds prices of 50/1 if taking his chance for legendary Irish trainer Willie Mullins.

2017 Gold Cup Results & Winners

2017 Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup Steeplechase (Grade 1 – Class 1 – £575,000 Prize Money)

  • 1st – SIZING JOHN (7/1)
  • 2nd – Minella Rocco (18/1)
  • 3rd – Native River (7/2)

Sizing John was a classy performer over the shorter trips, but he really came into his own over this 3m2f Gold Cup test at Cheltenham last year.

He was steadily supported all the way to race time and responded by giving his supporters a tremendous round of jumping under Robbie Power to land a famous win for trainer Jessica Harrington and the Pott’s family.

Minella Rocco stayed on best of the rest for 2nd, while Native River lacked the turn of foot required to get any closer than 3rd after running a solid race in his first Gold Cup.
