Brocklesby Stakes Doncaster 2025: Race Stats & Trends

Updated: March 27, 2025 at 10:04 am GMT+0

The Brocklesby Stakes may not be the biggest event in the racing calendar, but its a symbol that the flat is back.

In its traditional spot, opening the Lincoln card at Doncaster on Saturday, this two year old event sets off what should be an exciting 2025 flat season.

The race itself is a tough start for punters, unraced two year olds going head to head, and it's probably more of a future guide than a betting proposition for most punters going head to head with betting sites on the day.

But that won't stop us from trying to solve it!

Brocklesby Stakes - Doncaster 1:15pm Saturday

The opening race on Doncaster's seven race card that's headlined by the Lincoln handicap.

This is a watching brief for some, others will have a punt, and whatever you do, I'd definitely advise watching the race back at a later date and trying to pick out some eyecatchers.

If you've got any promotions for Doncaster in the shape of free bets and offers then this race is the first you could spend them on.

  • Date: Saturday, March 29, 2025
  • Time: 1:15pm
  • Race Type: Flat novice race for two-year-olds
  • Distance: 5 furlongs
  • Venue: Doncaster Racecourse
  • Purse: Winner - £20,616, Total Prize Fund - £40,000
  • Race Conditions: Open to two-year-old horses; colts and geldings carry 9st 4lb, while fillies carry 8st 13lb. Penalties include an additional 4lb for previous winners of a race, and 8lb for winners of two races (excluding sellers and claimers)

To try and help you pick out the winner in a really tough to solve task, we've put together a stats and trends guide for the race.

When the final declarations are out on Thursday morning, those looking at horse racing betting sites can begin to pin point which runners match the right profile for this contest.

  • Betting Favourites: The race often favours horses with shorter odds. In recent years, 13 of the last 16 winners had starting prices of 8/1 or shorter, indicating a trend towards well-regarded entrants performing strongly. This is a race where no one can really weigh up the opposition, so gambles are harder to pull off. However, plenty have a go, and if you're confident enough, then the feeling is that the horse must be a good one, which is why many winners end up being short in the market.
  • Foaling Dates: Horses foaled in February or March have shown success in this early-season contest, with 10 out of the last 16 winners born in these months. While all horses on the track are officially two year old at the moment, of course, their actual birth date determines their age. The Brocklesby, like many of the early season two year old races, is a race where dates matter, horses naturally grow a lot from one to two, so being officially two years old, compared to a horse that's 18 months old, can make a huge difference.
  • Trainer Insights: Certain trainers have demonstrated a knack for preparing horses for the Brocklesby Stakes. Bill Turner has secured six victories between 1996 and 2013, while Richard Fahey has achieved four wins, with notable successes in 2007, 2010, 2017, and 2019. Wins aren't always important though. Trainers that target this race, and usually see their horses run well, are often the best to follow here, as they know and understand what it takes to win a race like this.

Not really known for delivering top two year olds, we have seen some horses go on to triumph at a higher level after winning this race.

The Last Lion (2016): This colt not only won the Brocklesby but also triumphed in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes later in his two-year-old season.

Persian Force (2022): An impressive winner of the Brocklesby, Persian Force continued his success by securing the July Stakes (Group 2) and placing in multiple Group 1 races, including the Prix Morny and the Middle Park Stakes.
