Burnley v Preston Match Preview
If Burnley win promotion this season, 2024-25 might be remembered perhaps less fondly than the class of 2022-23, who played a high-tempo, front-foot game.
Scott Parker’s side have been efficient so far, accruing 17 points from their opening eight encounters, conceding just four goals in those games, and mustering that crucial 1-0 victory at Elland Road.
They’ve not been great to watch, though, regardless of what 4-1 and 5-0 victories in their first two games might suggest, with five of their last six games seeing under 2.5 goals scored – and the other one being a 2-1 victory over Portsmouth in which they grabbed a late goal in injury time.
Open and expansive opponents, Burnley can unlock with swift, longer passes down the flanks, but they struggle to unlock deep defensive blocks, which could be a problem for them in Saturday’s hosting of Preston North End.
The Lilywhites don’t have the personnel to play out from the back with too much success, so they’ll be looking to go long to Milutin Osmajić, allow wing-backs Kaine Kesler-Hayden and Robbie Brady high, but then with Ali McCann, Ben Whiteman and Stefán Teitur Þórðarson protecting the back-three of Jordan Storey, Liam Lindsay and Andrew Hughes.
