Fabio Wardley & Jarrell Miller - Chaotic Press Conferences Scenes

Fabio Wardley and Jarrell Miller clash at their Portman Road press conference, following a growing trend

Fabio Wardley and Jarrell Miller are set to clash at Ipswich's Portman Road on June 7th for the WBA 'interim' heavyweight title, and Monday saw a fiery press conference between the pair.

The Ipswich-born Wardley is the favourite with online betting sites to land the win in June, with Miller, the outsider in what's sure to be a bruising clash.

Our boxing expert, Lewis Watson, takes a closer look at Monday's press conference and the current trend of chaotic pressers.

Chaos at Portman Road

This summer on June 7, Ipswich-born Fabio Wardley will face American giant Jarrell Miller under the Portman Road lights – the first professional boxing event ever staged at the stadium.

The heavyweights came head-to-head on Monday afternoon to promote the Queensberry Boxing event and it didn't take long for temperatures to rise, with the pair having to be separated after a heated exchange.

Miller – donned in a Norwich City football shirt with 'GOING DOWN 25' on the back – was keen from the early stages to press the buttons of the Ipswich heavyweight, attempting to slap Wardley before being ushered off stage.

Before things boiled over, Miller had accused Wardley of making a "diss track" about the American heavyweight – something that was met with confusion by the 30-year-old Briton.

Wardley then replied by saying: “They call you ‘Big Baby’ because you don’t shut the f*** up – you need a pacifier in your mouth.”

This wasn't a surprise. We have seen Miller cause controversy wherever he goes, and if it wasn't for multiple failed drugs tests, he would have probably talked himself into more big fights than his record shows.

But Monday's press conference was just the latest in a recent line of examples where one of the protagonists has boiled over.

There are numerous occasions across the history of boxing where brawls have broken out between rival camps, but this recent run of Chris Eubank's egg-slap, Jeamie TKV's table-flip and Jarrell Miller's blow-up have signalled a spike in this sort of behaviour that had gone quiet for what has felt like a few years.

Fights need selling, and in today's world of social media clips and viral posts, an incident at a press conference could potentially generate more interest than any other media form can achieve.

Perhaps the rise of YouTube/influencer boxing is a core reason.

You won't see a press conference or a weigh-in in that controversial world without a handful of the participants losing their cool – a key component to their business model and how they are able to sell their fights, fighters and rivalries.

Whether or not this "beef" is believed is irrelevant. Those boxing fans who are dubious over the antics will watch the fight anyway – the spectacle is designed to grab new eyes that wouldn't otherwise know who either fighter was. And it's working.

The scheduled "Gloves are Off" head-to-head interview between Wardley and Miller was promptly postponed after Monday's antics with the pair told to go their separate ways, and it wouldn't be a surprise if, when they next meet, a line of stacked security staff act as a barrier between the fighters as well as a memorable photo opportunity.

Love them or hate them, press conferences and weigh-ins are returning to their unmissable 'best'.
