Luke Woodhouse to beat Lourence Ilagen 3-0
Lourence Ilagen is becoming part of the furniture at the Ally Pally.
The Filipino is making his seventh straight appearance at the Worlds, and his ninth in total, but still only has two wins to his name over these years.
The 46-year-old is always good value, but he’s drawn a player in Luke Woodhouse that is going from strength to strength in 2024.
“Woody” is up to number 35 in the world after a semi-final run at the European Championships, and with multiple impressive runs at European Tour and Players Championship Tour level, the 36-year-old is set up well for a competitive outing in north London.
Woodhouse has won more than he’s lost at the Palace, and should be able to sweep Ilagen aside in pretty quick fashion.
Alan Soutar vs Kai Gotthardt – Over 4.5 sets
Stephen Bunting told us at freebets.com that these two would be hard to separate, so who are we to argue with the “Bullet”?
Bunting awaits the winner of this opening round tussle, and it’s a case of age against experience with 17 years in between Soutar and Gotthardt.
Alan Soutar’s enjoyed his two previous visits to the Ally Pally reaching the fourth round on both occasions, but a run of seven straight first-round exits at the close of the Players Championship Tour has raised a few question marks over the form of the Scot.
Gotthardt is making his World Championship debut having qualified via the PDC Europe Super League final, and looks capable of asking plenty of questions of Soutar.
Cameron Menzies – Win Match, Most 180s & Highest Checkout vs Leonard Gates
Cameron Menzies is having somewhat of a breakout season on the PDC Tour.
The Scot, and partner of Fallon Sherrock, is a Grand Slam of Darts quarter-finalist as of this season, won the second to last Players Championship Tour event in Leicester and made another final, two semis and four quarters to see his world ranking rise to 39.
The 35-year-old has got through to the second round in both of his World Championship appearances over the past two years, and we can’t see any different at the 2025 tournament.
He takes on Leonard Gates as the highest ranked non-seeded player in north London, and the American challenger hasn’t shown enough this season to suggest he will put a spanner in the works of Menzies week.
