Whether it’s Buttler or Cummins missing, Maxwell or Brook, this next few weeks is something to look forward to.
England and 50-over world champions Australia, both much-changed, meet across eight matches; three T20Is and five ODIs. The summer wraps up on September 29, prior to a very busy first half of the winter with England touring Pakistan, West Indies and New Zealand for various commitments.
I’m really looking forward to this series, with both countries fielding some of their next generation.
England will be captained by Phil Salt in the absence of Jos Buttler - missing because of a calf injury - and they will be coached by Marcus Trescothick as he keeps the seat warm for Brendon McCullum, who assumes white ball duties in January.
A couple of pre-series bets for you….
Australia to win 2-1 correct score across the three matches is the bet I’d be going for, at 13/8 with Star Sports.
I much prefer that than the 8/11 straight series win for the visitors, who I just think are stronger at the minute in both limited overs formats even though England went further (semi-finals) at the recent T20 World Cup in the Caribbean.
Opener Travis Head is also 7/4 to be Australia’s top run-scorer in the series - also with bet365. He has been in sparkling form the last couple of months, which I’ll touch more upon in a minute.
I’m not too keen on taking Australia for the straight win in the opening game, available at 4/6.
So Betano’s boosted 5/1 on Australia to win and Head to top score for them in Southampton is what I’d be having a dabble with.
Head and shoulders above the rest
Before I continue suggesting success for Head, I want to concentrate on his team-mate Adam Zampa, who has just finished the joint leading wicket-taker in the Hundred with 19 and claimed four wickets in three matches against Scotland in Edinburgh last week.
Bet365 have the leg-spinner at 5/4 to take over 1.5 wickets in the series opener. That’s worth taking given his form and quality.
Left-handed Head scored an 80 in the first of the three T20 wins over Scotland.
It followed a Player-of-the-Series performance in the American MLC T20 competition, where he scored 336 runs in nine innings for champions Washington Freedom through July.
I like bet365′s 11/4 on Head to score a fifty in this match. In 30 career appearances against England across all formats, he’s scored 11 fifties and three hundred and averages 41.3. This rivalry seems to bring out the best in him.
And finally, William Hill’s #YourOdds 11/2 on an Australia win, for Zampa to take over one wicket and for England’s Will Jacks to hit over 20 runs is enticing.
Jacks has been pretty consistent of late. In three of his last four white ball innings for either Oval Invincibles and Surrey, he has reached 30.
