Weekend Boxing Betting Tips
Natasha Jonas to beat Ivana Habazin by Decision/Technical Decision
Tasha Jonas is enjoying a beautiful Indian Summer late on in her relatively short professional career.
The Liverpudlian turned 40 this year, but on a 6-0 winning run since losing a razor-sharp decision to Katie Taylor in 2021 is going from strength to strength in the welterweight division.
Former world champion Ivana Habazin is in the opposite corner for the 19th fight of Jonas’ professional career, and the 35-year-old Croatian looks a perfect opportunity for the home-town fighter to eek out another title defence on her growing record.
Habazin has lost two of her last five fights, one to Terri Harper last summer, pretty convincingly, who has since gone on to win just one of her next three contests.
Habazin may be the younger fighter, but with five losses on her record, 188 rounds in the bank and struggling for form, Jonas is a heavy favourite.
Jonas is a lot of things but she isn’t a concussive fighter. Expect her to dominate this one via a wide points decision.
MJ Akhmadaliev to beat Ricardo Espinoza in Rounds 1-6
Pocket-sized powerhouse MJ Akhmadaliev is gunning for a world title shot against Naoya Inoue.
It’s the obvious route for the 30-year-old southpaw, who is considered one of the only men likely to challenge the Japanese great in the super-bantamweight division.
Akhmadaliev nearly dropped the ball and the bag last year; a split decision loss to Marlon Tapales put the Uzbek back a few places in the queue for big fights, but an impressive stoppage win over Kevin Gonzalez last December has catapulted him back into the frame.
A quick, highlight-reel stoppage of 30-4 Ricardo Espinoza on Saturday will do wonders for MJ’s argument going into contract talks with Inoue, and considering the Mexican has lost all of his previous step-ups in quality, the favourite should get the job done.
Gary Cully to beat Maxi Hughes
Irish southpaw Gary Cully is on the rebuild.
The “Diva” blitzed through the domestic scene at 135-pounds before walking into the hard-punching Jose Felix last May where he lost his first contest.
The 28-year-old has won twice since, is now 18-1 and a big opportunity awaits against the experienced and game Maxi Hughes.
Hughes is 27-7-2 and has lost two of his last three, but will smell blood now that Cully has a loss on his record.
But Cully more than likely had an off night against Felix; it’s no surprise that he was over the 135-pound weight limit that night in Dublin as he looked ill-prepared.
The bookies have this as a coin toss, but Cully should be able to navigate this domestic dust-up with a win.
