Luke Humphries to win & most 100+ checkouts vs James Wade
It looks like itโs going to take something very special to get the better of Luke Humphries this week in Blackpool.
The world number one and reigning world champion has bagged three of the top six averages across his three wins this week, racking up monsters including 108, 102 and 101 en route to knocking out Ricardo Pietreczko, Stephen Bunting and Dimitri van den Bergh in style.
But James Wade has been rolling back the years as well.
The โMachineโ surprised the Winter Gardens by outscoring Ross Smith in the quarter-finals before taking the match 16-10, and now into his ninth semi-final at the Matchplay โ a record that can only be bettered by the man that the trophy is named after: Phil Taylor.
Wade will take plenty of legs off of Humphries in this race to 17, but the โspecialโ moments look set to fall the way of โCool Handโ Luke.
Humphries to win this duel and do it in style with a handful of 100+ checkouts.
Michael Smith to beat Michael van Gerwen
Michael Smith cantered to a 16-7 win over Rob Cross on Friday night without ever having to get out of second gear.
โBully Boyโ is into his third semi-final at the World Matchplay but heโll have to play better than he did against โVoltageโ in order to take the scalp of three-time winner Michael van Gerwen.
MVG rallied late on against Andrew Gilding to win 16-10 but down at 97 will be concerned that his average isnโt quite up to scratch if he is to dominate in this last four encounter.
Despite Smithโs successful few seasons, van Gerwen has won six of their last seven encounters after a dominant run over this seasonโs Premier League and will be concerned that the Dutchman has his numberโฆ but a race to 17 is a lot different to a short, sharp Premier League game where itโs first to grab six legs.
We fancy a mature Smith over the long distance to win this one and edge closer to winning his maiden World Matchplay title.
