James Wade to beat Rob Cross
Between James Wade and Rob Cross, the pair own three of the last six European Championships contested.
This sort of pedigree can often breed confidence in certain events, but it’s the head-to-head record between these two that really grabs the attention.
In boxing terms, Wade really has Cross’ number leading 9-3 over their last 12 meetings, including six of the last seven.
Cross is seeded seventh in Germany, but the money should be on an early ‘upset’ as Wade advances once again.
Luke Littler to beat Andrew Gilding 6-1
After a few iffy weeks on the oche, Luke Littler looked back to his sizzling best at last weekend’s Czech Darts Trophy, but ran into his old nemesis Luke Humphries once again and stumbled at the semi-finals.
He’s got a lighter touch in the opening round of the European Championship against Andrew Gilding, and the slow, laborious throw of “Goldfinger” won’t be a problem for the youngster.
Gilding didn’t get past the third round on the European Tour this season and is only up at number 22 in the world thanks to his shock UK Open win last season.
Littler shouldn’t give away too much here – 6-1 is looking like a good selection.
Mike De Decker to beat Josh Rock
Belgium’s Mike De Decker tore up the form book a fortnight ago in landing his maiden major title at the World Grand Prix, knocking over Luke Humphries pretty comprehensively in the final.
The 28-year-old followed up strongly at the Czech Darts Trophy and finds himself in a winnable bottom section of the draw in Dortmund.
Josh Rock is capable of blowing both hot and cold, but if he’s not at the hotter end of the scale then De Decker will walk straight through him.
De Decker at 10/11 to win the match is too good of value to be ignored after witnessing how comfortable he looked in Leicester.
