22-year-old Gian van Veen put on a career-best performance on Wednesday sweeping aside Ryan Joyce 10-2 with an average of 106.
The young Dutchman is a front-runner to headline the new breed of darts players coming through the ranks, and is now faced with an ageing pro in Gary Anderson in a major quarter-final.
Anderson’s form has been getting better and better over 2024, but the 53-year-old has admitted himself that he is putting fewer hours in on the practice board.
In a race to 16 legs stamina and concentration will play the biggest factor if players have to dig down into the trenches and we are siding with the exuberance of youth in the seemingly unstoppable van Veen.

These long races to 16 are still pretty new for the “Nuke”, but it gives him plenty of time to settle in and over the course of this quarter-final he should be able to accelerate away from the Dutchman at speed.
