The Deadly Group
After the period of domination between 2008 and 2012, there was always going to be a sense that the only way was down for the Spanish national team and if winning the World Cup in 2010 was the high water mark, then failure to get out of the groups in Brazil four years later was the nadir.
A nadir that left Spain in something of the wilderness in the decade that followed, not because of a lack of qualification but a lack of being able to turn it on when it truly mattered and although critics could label it as a decade of darkness, there have been shoots of recovery since.
Shoots that came in the form of reaching the last four of Euro 2020 before being dumped out by eventual holders Italy and success in the previous edition of the Nations League after beating the Netherlands in the final.
Admittedly, the Nations League does not hold the same prestige as La Rioja’s previous international prizes, but it has provided manager Luis de la Fuente and his players with the ideal platform in which to build from.
A platform that has seen Spain make light work of both Croatia and Italy already and with six points from six on the board, qualification to the Round of 16 has already been achieved with a game to spare.
Something that can only be considered as a sigh of relief when you consider the quality of Spain’s fellow group stage counterparts and with the two beaten nations having to deal with the qualification crumbs, there is also Albania who want a slice of the knockout stage cake.
A slice that will have been made bigger after their pulsating clash with Croatia on Wednesday afternoon and as in their opening clash with Italy, they would go ahead early on but then concede two goals to their opponents.
However, unlike their tournament bow when they faded fast after going behind, Albania under the tutelage of former Arsenal defender Sylvinho got their just reward with a dramatic injury time equaliser to get them off the mark in Germany.
Off the mark, but with arguably the most difficult task of all to follow and if Albania are to qualify for the Round of 16, they have to find a way to not only soothe Spain’s attacking instincts but also find their first win of the tournament.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips and with Spanish momentum being as it is, I can only envisage a third successive win in Germany and to squeeze slightly more value out of this, I am going to go with under 2.5 total goals as well. An outcome that is priced at 11/4.
In addition to this, I am going to back Spain to be ahead by a goal to nil at the break and to then double that advantage come the final whistle. Should you want to do the same, you can back this half time/full time correct score combination at odds of 10/1.
