Burnley v Plymouth Match Preview
Two of Burnley’s four league wins this season have come with Scott Parker’s side scoring four or more goals, as we saw at Luton on the opening weekend and at home to Cardiff the following week.
And yet, when they haven’t won, it’s been because they’ve failed to score, like the defeat at Sunderland and the weekend’s draw at Oxford, or were unable to unlock 10-man opposition in over half an hour’s football – as we saw in the Lancashire Derby with Blackburn.
Breaking down deep defensive blocks seems to be a problem for the Clarets, who also beat winless Portsmouth convincingly, only snatching three points in stoppage time.
So, this is a team that can struggle when the onus is on them to break opponents down, but once they’ve scored first, the floodgates can open and they can be hard to stop.
We could see a case of that against Plymouth Argyle on Tuesday night, especially with Luca Koleosho looking dangerous out wide, as we saw at Oxford last week.
And, if they score the first goal, which they should do with the quality of Koleosho, Lyle Foster, Jeremy Sarmiento and Hannibal Mejbri in attack, they could then find their groove and knock a few goals past their visitors.
