Finland v England Match Preview
England will be desperate to make amends in the Nations League away to Finland on Sunday evening.
The Three Lions were well below par earlier this week at Wembley as they slumped to their first defeat under Lee Carsley against Greece, who dedicated the win to the late George Baldock.
Carsley’s experiment of not deploying a recognised centre forward in the absence of Harry Kane and using a false number nine instead hugely backfired. Greece had the ball in the net several times, albeit three were ruled out for offside.
Finland, on the other hand, will have been licking their wounds after a 2-1 reverse against the Republic of Ireland, with Robbie Brady grabbing a late winner for the visitors.
While a trip to Helsinki may not seem that daunting, the pressure will ratchet up on Carsley and his charges a notch or two. Ahead of the game, I have sourced a couple of England betting tips for your consideration.
Three Lions to put their best foot forward
It would be fair to assert that Carsley’s gamble against Greece didn’t pay off and it was a big misstep.
There was a severe misbalance to the England starting line-up, and they found themselves routinely exposed.
Of course, without Kane, they lacked a focal point up top, and it is hoped he will be fit in time to face Finland.
Meanwhile, Bukayo Saka appeared to have a knee issue, and he will be monitored in the build-up to the Finland clash.
While Finland will feel like they can get at England, they haven’t beaten the Three Lions in any of their previous 16 competitive matches.
The previous two clashes have resulted in England wins, although the last time the Finns hosted them on home soil, both sides had to settle for a goalless draw.
I may have underestimated Greece last time out, but I think England will get back to their best this weekend. To open my England betting tips, I’m going with Carsley’s men to prevail and there to be a total of four or more goals across the 90 minutes. William Hill has offered juicy odds of 2/1 for that outcome.
Ollie Watkins to make the Finns pay
While largely anonymous against Greece, Ollie Watkins’ undeniable talent is clear for all to see.
Boasting blistering pace and of course a sharp eye for goal, Watkins can be a real difference maker.
Although he is waiting to get off the mark in the Nations League this term, he could see ample chances fall his way against Finland.
I think he could punish Finland and make a big impact. To round off my England betting tips, I’m plumping on Watkins to grab a double and an intriguing price of 17/2 can be found at bet365.
