Grand National Grey Horses: Runners in Early 2025 Aintree Field

Updated: April 1, 2025 at 8:27 am GMT+1

The Grand National is less than a week away, and after horses were taken out of the race when official five day declarations were made on Monday, the final field is coming together nicely.

One of the biggest talking points of the race, which is why it stands out from others, is always around fun stories, and why to bet on certain selections. Grey horses in the Grand National always attract interest, standing out in the packed field with their unique colour, many people decide to follow grey runners.

As we countdown the week to the race at Aintree, we'll be on hand to bring you the best Grand National free bets and offers, as well as keeping you up to date with all the latest news on the race.

Grey Horses in the 2025 Grand National

So, what runners are going to be taking part at Aintree in the Grand National, where people can place wages and free bets on a grey runner to win the most famous steeplechase?

As of the Monday declarations, here's a look at the potential grey runners.

Kandoo Kid - Paul Nicholls

Go back a few weeks, and this horse was subject of a strong move with UK betting sites, after Paul Nicholls revealed he thought the horse had a great chance of winning.

Winner of the Coral Gold Cup (former Hennessy) earlier in the season, he looks made for this kind of test, and represents a trainer that knows how to win the race.

Intense Raffles - Thomas Gibney

Instantly made favourite with horse racing betting sites when Inothewayurthinkin was taken out of the race, Intense Raffles is towards the head of the market, but no longer favourite for the race.

However, Thomas Gibney's runner certainly fits the profile for this race, winner of the Irish National last year, he comes here and will be one of the more fancied full stop, never mind just amongst grey runners.

Fil Dor - Gordon Elliott

Next up for Grand National grey horses we have Fil Dor, the first of potentially three grey runners for Gordon Elliott.

He's been busy this year but has been doing it all over shorter. It takes a big leap of faith to say he'll get this trip, and he needs to take a step forward on form too, if he's to get involved.

Coko Beach - Gordon Elliott

A veteran of the race, coming back for a 4th attempt to try and win it, so far he's not really been involved in the finish.

8th, 11th and pulled up in those efforts so far, this horse has plenty to prove, but at least knows Aintree well, and can use that experience to his advantage.

Vanillier - Gavin Cromwell

Second in 2023, but only 14th last year, the 10 year old Vanillier has some form lines in is back catalogue that would take him really close here.

A solid effort at Cheltenham in the Cross Country, he's back on the same mark as he was when finishing second two years ago, giving him a chance.

Hyland - Nicky Henderson

The Nicky Henderson trained Hyland had his first run outside of novice company back in February, an inexperienced horse, but with plenty of ability and the room to move forward in the future.

He's got some strong lines of form in the book, and if the test doesn't bring too much for him to handle, purely on racing form, he has a chance of going well here.

Duffle Coat - Gordon Elliott

Duffle Coat could sneak in right at the bottom of the weights to be another runner from the Gordon Elliott yard, but has plenty to prove on recent form.

He's failed to complete two of his last three starts, including when brought down at Cheltenham, while the one time he did complete, he finished last.

Previous Grey Winners of the Grand National

Three Grand National grey horses have been successful in the past, winning four times between them, but that's not much when you consider the long history of this race.

Will our horse racing tips on the day point to a grey winner, or will the wait for more go on?

The last grey to win the race was Neptune Collonges in 2012, trained by Paul Nicholls who is set to saddle another grey this season in Kandoo Kid.

Before that, it was 1961 the last time we saw a grey winner, while right back at the start, in 1868 and 1871, The Lamb was the first ever grey to win the race.

Connections of the horses above will be hoping that they can follow suit and bag another win for the Grand National grey horses in 2025.
