As far as footballing experiments go, Lee Carsley’s attempt to play every number 10 that he could have selected against Greece spectacularly backfired and with the Three Lions being outroared by their opponents, it was a memorable Wembley evening for all the wrong reasons.
Wrong reasons if you are of an English persuasion and as the hunt for a permanent successor to Gareth Southgate now has to take an awkward diversion. Then again, it was the right reasons for Greece and their Wembley win was arguably their greatest night in 20 years.
Not since their success at the 2004 European Championships has the Greek national team been such a talking point across the continent and inspired by their aim to pay tribute to George Baldock, Gus Poyet’s men could not have done a better job.
A 2-1 win registered in the history books but with the freedom that Carsley’s top heavy tactics afforded Greece, it was only the assistant referee’s flag on three separate occasions that stopped it being a rout in London on Thursday.
Afforded the opportunity to celebrate at the final whistle but now the focus shifts to this Sunday and the visit of the Republic of Ireland in what will be the fourth of sixth Nations League group games and the second time the two sides have met in as many months.
The reverse meeting saw the boys in green succumb to a second successive defeat under new manager Heimir Hallgrimsson and after suffering a 2-0 loss to England at the Aviva Stadium in early September, the same score at the same stadium was recorded against Greece days later.
Two results that meant September was a month to forget for Hallgrimsson and his new international charges, but October has at least offered more in the way of optimism – optimism that comes in the shape of Thursday’s win in Finland.
Finding themselves a goal down to Finland before the interval, it looked as if it was going to be more of the same for this current Irish crop. However, a goal from Liam Scales soon after the break would restore parity and then subsequently set up a grandstand finish.
A finish that saw Robbie Brady on hand to net a last minute winner and in doing so, it means Ireland do not find themselves in the automatic relegation berth before their trip to Piraeus in just a few hours.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips and after such a dominant display on Thursday, I think Greece will continue their 100% record in the Nations League and they will do so by earning a home win to nil at odds of 13/8.
In addition to this, I think Sunday’s hosts are going to waste no time in asserting their eventual advantage and with this in mind, I am also going to back a 2-0 lead for the hosts at the interval. An outcome that is currently priced at 9/1.
