Hull v Sheffield Wednesday Match Preview
Hull operate with a very narrow in-possession shape, in the early build-up phases.
They build with a full-back, such as Cody Drameh, inverted into midfield with the rest of the defence shuffling across to form a back-three, or a centre-back like Charlie Hughes shifting into midfield with both full-backs then tucking in behind to support Alfie Jones.
The idea of this is to free up all central midfielders to play on the half-turn and create as soon as they get the ball, instead of one of them having to be the conductor, whilst sucking the press into a narrow space to free up the wingers, who stay high up the pitch, to threaten in artificial transitions.
It’s a dangerous strategy, too, though, because the in-possession pressure on the defence, with midfielders instructed to not make themselves routinely available, is enormous, and it may be that this style hinders them against strong pressing sides, more than it helps them.
Visitors Sheffield Wednesday have potent counter-attacking weapons in Jamal Lowe and Anthony Musaba fresh to come into Danny Röhl’s XI, after the Owls could only manage a 1-1 draw with Cardiff on Saturday.
Wednesday created the better chances against the Bluebirds, and they’ve been performing better this season than results might suggest, with the Steel City outfit underperforming their xGF by 5.14 and their xGA by 1.98 – expect them to climb the table soon.
