Jahmyr Gibbs Over 83.5 Rushing Yards
The Lions enjoyed a week off, while the Commanders pulled off an upset in the wild-card round, defeating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 23-20 as 3.5-point road underdogs. Washington limited Tampa Bay to 284 total yards, including 101 rushing yards, with Bucky Irving contributing 17 carries for 77 yards.
In the regular season, the Commanders allowed 23.0 points per game (18th in the NFL), yielding 137.5 rushing yards (30th) and 189.5 passing yards (3rd). Their defence struggles against the run, conceding 4.8 yards per carry, and the Lions have the tools to take full advantage of this weakness.
Detroit’s offensive line is among the league’s elite, and their dynamic duo of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery will likely exploit Washington’s vulnerable run defence. Gibbs has been in exceptional form, recording at least 109 rushing yards and a touchdown in each of the final three games of the regular season.
The Lions secured the No. 1 seed in the NFC with a commanding 31-9 victory over Minnesota in Week 18. Gibbs delivered a standout performance, amassing 23 carries for 139 yards and three touchdowns, as well as five catches for 31 yards and a receiving touchdown.
The two-time Pro Bowler has surpassed 83 rushing yards in five of his last seven games. He wrapped up the regular season with 1,412 rushing yards (5.6 per carry) and 16 rushing touchdowns. With Montgomery dealing with injuries, Gibbs is expected to handle the bulk of the workload.
Jayden Daniels Over 33.5 Passing Attempts
The Lions allowed an average of 20.1 points per game during the regular season (7th in the NFL), conceding just 98.4 rushing yards (5th) but a concerning 244.0 passing yards (30th). This strong run defence will likely make it challenging for the Commanders to establish their ground game, forcing Jayden Daniels to rely on his passing abilities.
Last week, Daniels completed 24 of 35 pass attempts for 268 yards and two touchdowns in Washington’s impressive victory over the Buccaneers. The Commanders managed just 82 yards on 33 rushing attempts, with Daniels leading the effort on the ground with 13 carries for 36 yards.
Daniels has delivered an outstanding rookie season, throwing for 3,568 yards, 25 touchdowns, and nine interceptions while completing 69.0% of his pass attempts. Washington’s receiving corps, spearheaded by Terry McLaurin, poses a genuine threat. McLaurin caught seven passes for 89 yards and a touchdown in the wild-card round.
The Lions have limited their opponents to under 100 rushing yards in seven of their last nine games. Consequently, opposing quarterbacks have been forced to air it out, attempting at least 40 passes in each of Detroit’s last three outings. With injuries plaguing the Lions’ secondary, the Commanders must capitalise on these vulnerabilities.
