Liverpool v Chelsea Match Preview
Chelsea will sharpen their tools when they make the trip to Merseyside on Sunday afternoon to face in-form Liverpool.
This has been a combustible match over the years, and we’re not just talking about 'ghost goals' in the Champions League invoking memories of the Jose Mourinho era when he managed the West London outfit.
Liverpool have made a seamless transition under Arne Slot, winning nine of his first 10 games in charge of the club in all competitions, and it is the first time a new Reds boss has achieved this since the 1990/91 campaign.
Bar the slip-up to Nottingham Forest, those who aren’t of a Liverpool persuasion may point out that the fixture computer has been more than kind to them.
Chelsea, who were routinely lampooned last term, are in the top four shake-up, and they have been devastating at times going forward, led by master marksman Cole Palmer.
Anfield, as we all know, can be a difficult place to visit, but how will things unfold?
I have provided some insights ahead of this popcorn match, and as per usual, divulged a couple of Liverpool v Chelsea betting tips for you to sink your teeth into.
Honours even in Anfield battle
To date, this represents Liverpool’s stiffest test, and with a league clash against Arsenal to come the following weekend, more will be learned about the Reds’ title credentials.
So far, Liverpool have the meanest defence this season, conceding just twice, and one of those was against Forest in that shock loss.
Going forward, Liverpool are averaging two goals per game, and they have averaged more in a league game twice under Jurgen Klopp (2021/22 and last season).
Chelsea have been more porous defensively, but as mentioned, in Palmer, they have a difference maker.
Sometimes, big showdowns such as these are subject to hyperbole and they can be overhyped.
While Liverpool romped to a comfortable 4-1 victory over Chelsea last term, the previous four league meetings all ended in draws.
To kick off my Liverpool v Chelsea betting tips, I think the points could be shared. A draw looks like good value at 31/10 with bet365.
Caoimhin Kelleher to be kept busy for Liverpool
With Alisson set to be out for another few weeks following a hamstring injury picked up at Selhurst Park against Crystal Palace before the international break, there may be some anxiety pinched on the faces of Reds fans.
However, Liverpool appear to have a more than capable number two in Caoimhin Kelleher.
There has been speculation over the Irish shot-stopper’s future, and he could well leave next summer.
He will most likely keep the sticks for this game, but he could see his goal bombarded by Chelsea.
I have leaned into a match special for my second pick, and that could be for Kelleher to make six or more saves across the 90 minutes which is paying out at juicy odds of 12/1 with Paddy Power.
