Liverpool v West Ham Match Preview
There was always going to be a time when Liverpool lost their first game under new manager Arne Slot, a home reverse to Nottingham Forest almost a fortnight ago is not where people would have marked potential defeat on their calendar.
A shock defeat but maybe in the long-term there will be greater benefits to this relatively early loss under Slot. The wake-up call coming before complacency sets in and in the short-term there have certainly been benefits after losing to Nuno Espirito’s side.
Benefits that have been collected after a dominant performance at the San Siro in the Champions League and a routine win at Anfield in the Premier League. Last Tuesday saw AC Milan turned over on their own patch, last Saturday it was Bournemouth who were rolled over with ease.
A perfect start in Europe’s premier club competition, a perfect finish to the week in the Premier League and thanks to their 3-0 win over the Cherries and the subsequent draw between Manchester City and Arsenal the following day, the Reds are just a point off the top.
Now though, it is League Cup matters that appear on the horizon and Liverpool begin their defence of the trophy against a West Ham side who may still be battered and bruised after their own 3-0 loss on Saturday.
One that came at the hands of Chelsea and with the likes of Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer being given the freedom of the London Stadium, the end result was not just a heavy defeat for West Ham but also the heavy sound of booing towards new manager Julen Lopetegui.
A third successive Premier League home defeat is not the way to endear yourself to a new fanbase and especially one that could not even get behind a man who delivered European glory to the club a couple of years ago.
David Moyes was eventually pushed out by a West Ham fan base who are notoriously hard to please, Lopetegui and his players have not done a lot to please the same fan base at the start of this season.
Their only respite has been away from home, where a win at Crystal Palace and a draw at Fulham have seen them pick up the four points that are currently in their possession. No league points are on offer on Wednesday night, but further progress in the League Cup certainly is.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips and although West Ham are saving their best for their travels, I do not see them having any joy at Anfield. Therefore, I am backing the hosts to win both halves at odds of 2/1.
In addition to this, the strength of both lineups will need to be considered when announced and if Liverpool go strong as expected, I expect another routine win for them. Routine that comes in the form of a 3-0 final score and this is priced at 17/2.
