Manchester City v Sparta Prague Match Preview
It certainly was not the only contentious issue of last weekend’s Premier League soap opera but the episode at the Molineux was certainly one of the biggest talking points and with John Stones heading home a controversial late winner, it would see Manchester City go top of the table.
Top for just a couple of hours and with Liverpool’s win over Chelsea later that same Sunday, it is Pep Guardiola’s men who are currently playing catch up in the Premier League. Then again, they find themselves also playing catch-up in the Champions League.
Before Matchday 3 begins there are seven clubs that have picked up maximum points to date, City are not one of them and although they made light work of Slovan Bratislava during Matchday 1, facing Inter in Matchday 2 was far more difficult.
Difficult but not impossible in terms of trying to earn some form of reward and with both defenses coming out on top, the repeat of the 2023 Champions League final in Istanbul saw honours even at the Etihad.
This means that the team that lifted the trophy the season before last sit eighth at the time of writing and although they are not on maximum points, they are top of all the teams that have dropped something along the way.
If City were to stay there at the conclusion of the new Champions League extended league phase, it would provide them with automatic entry to the knockout phase.
Now though, they will look to get back on the winning European trail as Sparta Prague visit on Wednesday night and with the Czech outfit also sitting on four points from their first two outings, Lars Friis and his players are arguably exceeding their continental ambitions.
A rather comfortable win over Salzburg on Matchday 1 saw their Austrian opponents succumb to a 3-0 reverse at the Stadion Letna and after getting off the mark in perfect fashion, they were then good value for a point at the end of Matchday 2.
That point coming after a trip to Germany and Stuttgart in particular and although Sebastian Hoeness’ side would find themselves ahead thanks to Enzo Millot’s early opener, Kaan Karinen’s goal before the break would restore parity and continue Sparta’s unbeaten start in Europe.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips and although Wednesday’s visitors are on the same points as the hosts, this is where the difficulty level starts to pick up and with little value, I am going to go for a goal fest. A home win and over 4.5 goals can be backed at the short price of 2/1.
In addition to this, I like the look of one of City’s defenders getting on the scoresheet and to really make the bookmakers sweat, I am going to focus my attention on Rico Lewis. If it is to be a free for all in terms of total goals, then I am backing the 19-year-old to score at odds of 9/1.
