A rather indifferent start to the Premier League for Manchester United was continued at the weekend and after being held to a bore draw by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, the Red Devils currently find themselves sitting in the bottom half of the table.
Far from ideal when you consider the constant murmurs surrounding Erik ten Hag’s tenure as manager and although the visit of Tottenham on Sunday needs to be planned for, there is at least a form of midweek respite from the Premier League.
Respite that comes in the form of Europa League action and with UEFA’s club competitions all moving into a new format, United’s primary objective will be to earn a top eight finish after eight league phase fixtures.
Meet that primary objective and United will not have to meet an opponent in the knockout round play-offs. Should they go on to finish somewhere between ninth and 24th in this incredibly long league ladder, then a level of jeopardy comes into play.
Anywhere in those positions and it is the longer route to the knockout bracket. Anywhere from 25th and below and the Old Trafford outfit will be one of 12 teams to be kicked out of this season’s Europa League at the first hurdle.
Their very first hurdle of the eight guaranteed fixtures sees them go up against Dutch outfit FC Twente and after making a bright start to the new Eredivisie season, manager Joseph Oosting and his players will look to transfer that form to European competition.
Coming into Wednesday’s meeting in Manchester, FC Twente find themselves sitting fourth in the Eredivisie table. They may currently be seven points behind leaders PSV Eindhoven, but they still sit above the giants known as Feyenoord and Ajax.
While it should also be noted that of the first six league games that FC Twente have contested at the start of this season, they have only lost once. That defeat coming at the hands of FC Utrecht in a week 3 – a side that currently sits third in the table.
Then again, holding your own in Dutch football is a different beast to mixing it with one of the biggest clubs in Europe and with seven other opportunities to get the necessary points on the board, this may not be the night where FC Twente open their new Europa League account.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips, and I am going to place a two-leg bet builder to get things underway. A Manchester United win in front of their own support and under three total goals at odds of 16/5 has grabbed my attention before Wednesday night.
In addition to this, I am going to opt for the referee to be rather lenient in terms of discipline. You can get exactly one player to be carded at odds of 8/1 and if both Manchester United and FC Twente largely behave themselves, it will be the punters who reap the rewards.
