Next Watford Manager Odds: Alberto Garrido the early frontrunner

May 6, 2025 at 2:23 pm GMT+1

Watford announced the sacking of Tom Cleverley on Tuesday after finishing 14th in the Championship despite a bright start to the season.

The Hornets had been competing for a top six spot until a run of one win in their last nine matches effectively sealed Cleverley's fate and prompted online betting sites to publish next Watford manager odds.

Here's a guide to the current markets as they look for a 10th manager in the past five years.

Alberto Garrido

Outsiders might not be immediately familiar with this name, but he is the obvious early frontrunner for the hotseat at Vicarage Road having served as Cleverley's number two this season.

He has some pedigree too, having been brought in from the backroom staff at Real Madrid, albeit the Castilla side, where he was assistant manager to Raul for five years having held a number of other roles within the club.

However having never had a main manager's role and at the age of 49, it would appear an unconvincing appointment and hardly one that will excite Watford fans - you would assume he just leads the betting as he is already in place at the club.

Watford have shown that they're not afraid to make bold appointments but it's hard to see this one happening, and if we looked at the odds in a week or two, there's a good chance his name no longer appears.

Gary O'Neil

As predicted when Norwich sacked Johannes Hoff Thorup a couple of weeks ago and O'Neil was linked, the former Bournemouth and Wolves manager is going to be hot property this summer.

He was very highly rated at times in his previous two managerial stints but ultimately lost his job with Wolves stuck in the bottom three, a position which has changed significantly since his departure.

Nevertheless, he would surely be very well received by supporters and players alike. Known as a good training ground coach, O'Neil would be in a similar mould to Cleverley so it might be quite an easy transition for the club to make.

For someone highly rated who will surely have his pick of jobs this summer - you would think any of the relegated clubs would be interested in his services along with teams pushing for promotion next season - the job security at Watford might not appeal, so don't be surprised if he passes on this one.

Sean Dyche

Does Dyche have unfinished business at Vicarage Road?

What has turned out to be a very successful managerial career started at the club he spent three years as a player at, but he only lasted one year before he was sacked at the end of the 2011-12 season.

It was a decent enough campaign with seven points more than Cleverley's Watford this season, but he has niot looked back since in spells at Burnley and Everton earning him a reputation as a very good - if limited - manager at the top level.

Unless there is a real urge pulling him back to the club it is hard to imagine Dyche being tempted back, as you would expect he still has ambitions to manager in the Premier League, but at some point he may have to accept dropping down a level.

He would be considered a real coup for a club in Watford's position however, but you suspect his name only appears in the Championship betting markets because of his past connections to the club.

Rob Page

Page is another one who appears in the betting thanks mainly to his past connections with the club.

Page made over 200 appearances for the Hornets in eight years and captained the club, so he does that have that connection to the fans but it would seem at this stage to be a fairly underwhelming appointment.

He did a decent job with Wales of carrying on Gary Speed's work in charge of the national team but a poor showing at the 2022 World Cup and then poor performances in the Nations League saw his star diminish pretty quickly.

He has been out of work for a year now - and hasn't worked for a club since 2017 - so actually, he might be someone who isn't put off by Watford's dismal records with managers over the years.

It might be a relatively underwhelming appointment, but with Watford you come to expect the unexpected, and this would fit that bill.

Russell Martin

Like O'Neil, Martin should be in high demand this season even despite losing his job at Southampton.

Yes the Saints have had one of the worst Premier League seasons on record thanks largely to the optimistic playing style implemented by Martin at the start of the season, but it should not be forgotten what a good job he did to get them promoted in the first place.

Martin feels like he is a manager who likes a project, so the short-term feel of managing at Watford might not be well suited to him but if they have any ambition, they should be targeting someone like him.

The next job could be a big one in Martin's managerial career so he needs to get it right, and after getting one promotion under his belt you would think he should be able to attract an offer for a top-six Championship side.
